Friedman: breaking down the proposed Taylor Hall haul

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman did has last Calgary radio hit of 2019 with Sportsnet 960 The Fan on Friday morning. He chatted with Dean Molberg and Will Nault about many things, but a lot of the discussion centered around the Calgary Flames’ reported interest in Taylor Hall prior to his trade to the Arizona Coyotes.
Were the Flames right in there with Arizona for Hall’s services? Well, yeah. Friedman detailed that the Flames’ package was more now-based than Arizona’s – from our perspective possibly a product of the Flames wanting some cap flexibility, and possibly due to them wanting to protect their future assets – while Arizona’s was obviously entirely futures-based with three prospects and two picks.
But the Flames’ inability to talk with Hall about a contract extension is probably what put a damper on the deal.
Calgary is the type of place I think Hall would like to play. I mean, he might end up staying in Arizona. They’re going to have the ability to offer him more money than anyone else. I think the one thing with Hall, though, is that he likes the big stage and Calgary is a big stage. And I think they knew that appealed to him and they wanted at least the opportunity to speak to him about it.
Hall is represented by Darren Ferris, who also is the agent for Flames forwards Tobias Rieder and Sam Bennett.
Friedman declined to provide a ton of details on the content of the Flames’ now-based pitch, other than saying “I heard it was a couple guys on the roster.” He declined to specify which ones because he wasn’t sure (and didn’t want to rankle any GMs unless he was sure).
The big takeaway? As usual, Brad Treliving was right in the mix when a prominent player was on the move – just like he was with Mark Stone and Nazem Kadri. The circumstances just weren’t quite there for him to stick the landing.
