National Hockey League clubs are beginning to make their big off-season moves. With some big names on the blueline coming off the board, attention is apparently shifting towards a Calgary Flames blueliner. Per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on the Headlines intermission segment on Saturday night, teams have begun to ask the Flames about Noah Hanifin.
Here’s Friedman:
I think one of the names you’re going to start to hear a little bit here is Noah Hanifin from Calgary. He’s got one more year, like a lot of the Calgary players do, and I think teams have begun to ask the Flames, ‘what exactly are you thinking about here? What’s the future?’A lot of us are talking about Winnipeg right now, and for good reason, but low-key, I think Calgary could be just as interesting a team as Winnipeg over the next few weeks, depending on how all these players feel about their futures.
Hanifin has been with the Flames since being acquired in a trade with Carolina at the 2018 NHL Draft. He’s been a top-four fixture since his arrival, forming some strong defensive pairings alongside Rasmus Andersson and Chris Tanev.
But Hanifin is entering the final season of his contract and could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2024. At his introductory press conference, general manager Craig Conroy expressed that he didn’t want to walk players to free agency. So… something’s gotta give.

The Flames have seven players that could become UFAs in 2024: Hanifin, Elias Lindholm, Mikael Backlund, Tyler Toffoli, Oliver Kylington, Chris Tanev and Nikita Zadorov. The fate of most of those players will likely be determined during the 2023 off-season so the Flames can avoid contractually white-knuckling it through the 2023-24 season.
