The IIHF Worlds continue with a lighter day featuring just four games on the schedule.
๐ธ๐ฐ Slovakia vs. ๐ฆ๐น Austria
It was the third game of the tournament to go into overtime. While the Austrians struggled with penalties, it was their goaltender, David Kickert, who kept them in it with 30 saves. The game eventually went to a shootout that required ten shooters to decide a winner.
Martin Chromiak scored on Slovakiaโs second attempt to open the scoring in the shootout. After the next two shooters missed, Austrian forward Lukas Haudum tied it up. Peter Schneider followed with a goal to give Austria the lead, putting the pressure on Slovakia to score and stay alive. Michal Kristof stepped up but missed the net wide left, sealing a 3โ2 win for Austria.
Sam Honzek got Slovakia on the board with his first goal of the tournament. After winning a battle in the corner, a clearing attempt landed on his stick in front of the net, and he wired a shot top corner. Despite this being his strongest performance so far, Honzek still saw significantly less ice time than many of his teammates and did not play in overtime. Weโll see if heโs earned a few more shifts or if his role with the team will remain limited.
Next games:
- ๐ธ๐ฐ Slovakia: May 14 vs. ๐ซ๐ท France
- ๐ฆ๐น Austria: May 15 vs. ๐จ๐ฆ Canada
๐บ๐ธ United States vs. ๐จ๐ญ Switzerland
The United States appeared to have a case of the Mondays, as the offence was non-existent in their match-up with Switzerland.
Damien Riat and New Jersey Devils defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler opened the scoring for the Swiss in the first period. After a goalless second, former Columbus Blue Jacket Dean Kukan added another in the third. In goal, 37-year-old Leonardo Genoni stopped all 23 American shots for the shutout.
Next games:
- ๐บ๐ธ USA: May 14 vs. ๐ณ๐ด Norway
- ๐จ๐ญ Switzerland: May 15 vs. ๐ฉ๐ช Germany
๐ธ๐ช Sweden vs ๐ซ๐ฎ Finland
As has often been the case in this tournament, one team typically dominates the pace of play, shots on goal and other key metricsโyet the score remains tight. Todayโs match-up between Sweden and Finland was no exception.
While the Swedes came away with a 2โ1 victory, the outcome could have been very different if not for Nashville Predators goaltender Juuse Saros, who made 39 saves on 41 shots. Leo Carlsson and Jonas Brodin each found the back of the net, but that was all Sweden could muster against Saros.
Finland attempted a third-period comeback for the second straight game. After Harri Pesonen pulled the Finns within one, they were unable to find the equalizer against Jacob Markstrรถm.
Neither Rasmus Andersson nor Mikael Backlund had strong performances. Neither recorded a point, although Backlund did manage a solid day in the face-off circle, finishing with a 71 per cent success rate.
Next games:
- ๐ธ๐ช Sweden: May 14 vs. ๐ฑ๐ป Latvia
- ๐ซ๐ฎ Finland: May 15 vs. ๐ธ๐ฎ Slovenia
๐จ๐ฟ Czechia vs ๐ฉ๐ฐ Denmark
Flames netminder Dan Vladar finally saw game action in the tournament, and he made the most of the opportunity. Vladar was active in the crease, facing 31 shots and stopping 29 of them. Both goals allowed came from point-blank range, giving him little chance to make the saves. Overall, it was a strong showing that may earn him another start.
However, it was the ๐จ๐ฟ Czech offence that truly stole the spotlight. Led by NHL veterans David Pastrลรกk and Martin Neฤas, the Czechs exploded for seven goals, remaining undefeated as they continue their title defence.
Next games:
- ๐จ๐ฟ Czechia: May 15 vs. ๐ญ๐บ Hungary
- ๐ฉ๐ฐ Denmark: May 14 vs. ๐ฐ๐ฟ Kazakhstan
