The Calgary Flames headed to Washington State on Saturday night for the sixth and final game of their lengthy two week road trip, and their final road game of the 2025-26 season, when they visited the Seattle Kraken. The Flames were decent enough all things considered, but their puck management details weren’t quite up to snuff.
The Flames briefly had a lead, but they ended up falling to the Kraken by a 4-1 score.
The rundown
The Flames tended to have control of the puck more in the opening period, but the Kraken arguably got the better quality scoring chances – at least a few coming off a few Flames’ defensive miscues in their own end.
Devin Cooley made a diving save attempt, and the Kraken chance rang off the crossbar and stayed out.
First period shots were 12-6 Flames.
The Flames opened the scoring early in the second period. They had offensive zone possession and cycled the puck. Matt Coronato attempted a pass across the zone, and it bonked off a Kraken player and drifted over to the far side of the zone for a pinching Hunter Brzustewicz. Brzustewicz fired a shot that beat Nikke Kokko at the far corner of the net to give the Flames a 1-0 lead.
But just 54 seconds later, the Kraken tied it up. Seattle rushed into the Flames zone, with Kaapo Kakko feeding Freddie Gaudreau in the slot and Gaudreau beating Devin Cooley high to tie the game at 1-1.

Late in the period, the Kraken took the lead. This time, they executed a nice little passing play off the rush, with their puck movement just eluding the sticks and feet of the Flames’ defenders. Vince Dunn made a nice pass to find Chandler Stephenson all alone by the Flames net and Stephenson tucked it past Cooley to give the home team a 2-1 edge.

A little while later, the Kraken continued to pour on the pressure and the Flames were stuck in their own zone chasing the puck around. Matty Beniers fired a shot that beat Cooley in the far side top corner to give Seattle a 3-1 lead.
Second period shots were 8-4 Kraken.
The third period was fairly back and forth, but the Kraken seemed perfectly content to sit on their lead and kill the clock. They managed the game and the puck pretty well in the final frame.
The Flames pulled Cooley for the extra attacker with a couple minutes left in regulation. Joel Farabee had a good chance late, but Jordan Eberle scored a long empty-netter to give the Kraken a 4-1 victory.
Third period shots were 11-6 Flames.
Why the Flames lost
The Flames were decent enough in this game. That said, their puck management and decision-making was a bit lacking, and too many times they were caught in the wrong spots on the defensive side of the puck and allowed the Kraken to get a high-quality shot off. The Flames didn’t get their show run or anything, but they were just a bit too casual in their own end.
Red Warrior
We’re going to default to Mikael Backlund, who had a ton of shots, won a ton of face-offs, and did his level best to give his team a chance on the road. That’s really all you can ask of your captain given the situation.
Turning point
The third Seattle goal in the third period was a tough one. It was scored with 4.4 seconds left in the frame, and gave the Kraken some breathing room heading into the third period.
This and that
Devin Cooley started in net. Abram Wiebe played his first NHL game. The Flames ended up playing four rookie defencemen and three rookie forwards in this game.
