With the Vancouver Canucks falling to the Edmonton Oilers this past Monday, the Calgary Flames will officially pick 28th overall.

On top of that, the Flames will pick in the early 40s as well with their second round pick, so in this article, we’ll look at one player who could be available at either one of these picks! 
Let’s take a look at Luke Misa!

Left-shot centre, born Nov. 25, 2005, in Oakville Ontario, 5’10”, 175 lbs
Kachow! Luke Misa is an 18-year-old centre playing for the Mississauga Steelheads. This past season was his best year so far in the Ontario Hockey League, scoring 26 goals and 81 points, beating out the 13 goals and 43 points he scored in 2022-23. Notably, he is the older brother of Saginaw Spirit left-winger Michael Misa, likely a top 5 pick in the 2o25 draft.
One thing you get to learn after watching so many drafts and reading so much content on said drafts is that once the lottery picks conclude, it is an utter crapshoot. Misa ranks anywhere from the high 20s from <a href="https://dobberprospects.com/2024/04/20/dobberprospects-april-top-96-for-the-2024-nhl-draft/">Dobber Prospects</a>, <a href="https://thehockeynews.com/news/ferraris-2024-nhl-draft-rankings-top-64-before-the-world-u-18s">The Hockey Writers</a>, and <a href="https://smahtscouting.com/2024/04/07/spring-2024-nhl-draft-rankings-1/">Smaht Scouting</a>, but ranks as <a href="https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/macklin-celebrini-the-unanimous-no-1-prospect-in-bob-mckenzie-s-mid-season-draft-ranking-1.2066050">Bob McKenziz’s 67th prospect</a> and even lower from <a href="https://www.nhl.com/draft/prospects/2024/north-american-skater">NHL Central Scouting, who ranks him as the 76th best North American skater</a>.
His consolidated ranking according to <a href="https://www.eliteprospects.com/draft-center/consolidated-ranking">Elite Prospects is the 41st best draft prospect</a>, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5326639/2024/03/25/nhl-draft-ranking-top-64-prospects/">one spot below where The Athletics Scott Wheeler has him</a>, while <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/2024-nhl-draft-rankings-pre-under-18-world-championship-top-75">Daily Faceoff has Misa ranked 47th overall</a>. In a recent <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5501466/2024/05/22/nhl-mock-draft-two-round-predictions-2024/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=twhq&amp;source=twitterhq">The Athletic mock draft, Wheeler and Corey Pronman have the Edmonton Oilers picking Misa 62nd overall</a>. This is to say that Misa could be picked anywhere, no one knows.
So what does Misa bring to the table? Well, his skating is some of the best in the draft according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5326639/2024/03/25/nhl-draft-ranking-top-64-prospects/">Wheeler in his March update</a>. He can use that speed to beat defenders and is good at passing, while being able to “process the game quickly at his speed”. However, he does stand at under six feet, which may be seen as a problem.

Aside from Bob McKenzie’s 67th ranking and NHL Central Scouting’s 76th ranking, <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/2024-nhl-draft-rankings-pre-under-18-world-championship-top-75">Daily Faceoff ranked Misa the lowest at 47th</a>. They note his speed and his improvement in 2023-24, but consistency is something he’ll need to improve on.
Dobber Prospects once had Misa at his highest ranking (21), <a href="https://dobberprospects.com/2024/04/20/dobberprospects-april-top-96-for-the-2024-nhl-draft/">but he dropped to the 32nd best draft prospect in their April update</a>. Once again, it’s noted how his skating is arguably the best in the class while also making plays with that speed. The playmaking is “excellent”, but he can be a little overzealous with over skating off the puck. While he may play a different role in the National Hockey League than he does with Mississauga, he’s an interesting prospect to keep an eye on.

You know the drill, he’s a great skater and good at distributing the puck. However, Ferrari is the first writer to note that his defence is subpar, noting that “he can disappear at times”. Also due to his size, Ferrari notes he doesn’t throw hits on the forecheck.
At this point, who knows when Misa will be available. He ranks anywhere from slightly after the lottery all the way to the bottom of the second round. Thankfully for the Flames, they have three picks in that area, so even though he may not be a Day 1 pick, they could probably snag him in the second round.
