In every draft class, there are players that scouts (and fans) are already familiar with before the draft year begins, and then there are players that everyone learns about in real-time. For every Keaton Verhoeff, who enter their draft season with much fanfare and hype, there are players that emerge over the course of the season as impressive prospects in their own rights.
Czech defenceman Jakub Vanecek is the second type of prospect. He might not have been highly-touted when the 2025-26 season began, but he’s become a pretty prominent prospect in the 2026 draft class.

What do scouts think of Jakub Vanecek?

A product of Humpolec, Czechia – a town of 11,000 in south-central Czechia – Vanecek is a left shot defenceman listed at 6’2″ and 198 pounds. He’s a February 2008 birthday, so he’s on the younger side of the draft class.
He played his youth hockey both in his hometown and the neighbouring, slightly-larger town of Havlickuv Brod, before moving onto the Bili Tygri Liberec organization in 2022-23 as a 14-year-old. He pretty consistently played a year or two ahead of his age group, moving onto U17 and U20 hockey in 2023-24 and 2024-25 (in his 15 and 16-year-old seasons).
He was selected in the CHL Import Draft by the Tri-City Americans in 2025 and made the move to North America for the 2025-26. He also represented Czechia in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, the World Juniors and the Under-18 World Championships, though he didn’t dress for any World Junior games.
Over at Dobber Prospects, Andrew Epps wrote this report in June:
Vanecek came over from Czechia and turned his first WHL season into a top-four role with Tri-City, finishing with 14 goals and 35 points in 59 games and earning a draft combine invite. He’s a left-shot, 6-2 defender who skates well and carries the puck with confidence, the kind of mobile two-way blue-liner NHL teams target: he handles his own end, breaks the puck out cleanly, and can skate the team out of trouble. The shot is above average and the hands are good enough to beat a man one-on-one, which showed up as power-play production with the Americans and again at the U18 Worlds, where he led Czechia with five points in seven games on the way to bronze. He sat as a depth option at the World Juniors without playing but came home with silver.
Our pal Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff included Vanecek in his May top 100 ranking, having him just a smidge outside of the first round group:
Vaněček has hovered around this mark for most of the season for me. I like how he’s always moving thanks to a non-stop motor and good overall footwork. He beats opponents by taking their space away and forcing them to the perimeter. Vaněček isn’t too shabby with the puck, although his decision-making needs a bit of work. I like his two-way game and I think he’ll force his way into a bottom-pairing situation one day.

How did Jakub Vanecek perform in 2025-26?

As a Western Hockey League rookie with Tri-City, Vanecek had a pretty strong offensive output. He posted 14 goals and 35 points over 59 games. He was sixth among rookie defencemen in points.
He led the Under-18 Worlds tournament in goals by a defenceman, scoring three times and posting five points. Czechia took home bronze.

Could Jakub Vanecek be a fit for the Calgary Flames?

The Flames system is chock full of right shot defenders who are on the smaller side. Vanecek is a left shot defender with some size, and he’s posted some solid offensive numbers wherever he’s played. You could understand why the Flames would like the player, especially considering how well he adapted to the WHL play style.
In terms of availability, there seems like a potential fit, too. The Flames have four second-round picks in their possession, including two early second-rounders. Meanwhile, Vanecek is generally slotted in public draft rankings as a player likely to go in the early part of the second round. If the Flames like Vanecek’s game, he could be someone that slots in nicely where they’re expected to draft.
