As National Hockey League clubs trim down their training camp rosters, we’re getting daily waiver wire news from folks like Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Per Friedman, Jonathan Aspirot and Clark Bishop, placed on waivers on Saturday by the Calgary Flames, have cleared waivers.
Subsequent to their clearing waivers, the Flames announced that they’ve been assigned to the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers. Also per Friedman, the Flames have placed forwards Martin Frk and Justin Kirkland on waivers. Should they clear waivers on Monday, they would presumably also be assigned to the Wranglers.
The 30-year-old Frk is a product of scenic Czechia, and was a draft choice of the Detroit Red Wings back in 2012. He boasts a heck of a hard, accurate shot, but he hasn’t quite turned that into the NHL career that many projected for him when he was drafted. However, he’s played 124 games in the NHL and established himself as a really good AHL scorer. For a Wranglers team that will boast some youngsters in their early 20s, Frk could be a great player for them to learn from and compete with for ice time.
The 28-year-old Kirkland is a Canadian kid and a draft choice by Nashville from 2014. He’s a really effective 200-foot player who’s spent much of his time at the AHL level, including three seasons with the Stockton Heat. The Flames know him well and with the departure of veterans like Mitch McLain (to Henderson) and Brett Sutter (to coaching), he seems destined for an important role for the Wranglers this coming season. He’s also shown that he’s capable of playing in the NHL, as evidenced in call-ups stints with Anaheim and Arizona in recent years.
The assignments of Aspirot and Bishop bring the camp roster down to 38 players, including Frk and Kirkland.
