LeBrun: Calgary Flames ‘getting late in the process’ of hiring general manager

The Calgary Flames announced the departure of incumbent general manager Brad Treliving via a press release a month ago. Per a report from The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, it sounds like the Flames are nearing the finish line on hiring a new GM.
As part of a discussion on coaching hirings throughout the league, LeBrun added this line: “Obviously, the Flames won’t get going on a coach until a GM is hired, and my understanding is that they’re getting late in the process there.”
Speaking after the draft lottery results, Flames president of hockey operations Don Maloney indicated the club’s preference would be to have a GM place for their pre-draft scouting meetings, which take place in about a week or so in Calgary. Reports we’ve heard from folks like LeBrun and Elliotte Friedman make it seem like that’s a very real possibility.
LeBrun also seemingly confirmed a report from Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli regarding Brad Treliving. Seravalli reported last week that the Flames were declining to allow other teams permission to talk to Treliving until his contract expired. LeBrun added this in his rumblings:
“I was also told the Penguins wanted to include Brad Treliving as part of their first wave of Zoom interviews but the Flames denied them permission, apparently telling Pittsburgh it would have to wait until Treliving’s contract expired June 30…”
It’s an odd look.
We’ll have more on the Flames’ GM search as it unfolds.
