LeBrun: Calgary Flames ownership talked extension with Brad Treliving before the season

It’s been discussed often around here, and elsewhere in Calgary Flames circles, that general manager Brad Treliving is working under an expiring contract, with his deal set to expire following the end of the season.
But according to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, Flames ownership talked extension with Treliving prior to the season – around when they ended up signed Darryl Sutter to a new deal.
Here’s a snippet (it’s paywalled, so give ’em money if you want the whole thing):
“My understanding is that Flames ownership also had extension talks with Treliving at around the same time, before the season, and for whatever reason those talks didn’t produce a deal. I believe both sides mutually agreed to talk again at some point.”
For what it’s worth, this is Treliving’s third contract as Flames GM; his initial deal was 2014-17, then 2017-20, and now 2020-23. His first extension was announced by the club on May 1 (2017), more or less right as his first deal was about to end. His second extension was announced by the club on Oct. 3 (2019), essentially as he was entering his final year. Waiting until the end of the season to extend isn’t entirely unusual for the Flames.
Treliving is in his ninth season as GM. In eight complete seasons, the Flames have made the playoffs five times (2015, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021), won the Pacific Division twice (2019, 2021) and escaped the first round of the playoffs twice (2015, 2021).
