For the second year in a row, Lucas Ciona was named as the Calgary Wranglers Man of the year. Every year, the team votes for the player who best exemplifies positive contributions to the community and charitable organizations over the course of the season. Each team selects one player for this award and it qualifies them to be recognized by the league for the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award for the overall community award after the end of the regular season.
Lucas found out on Tuesday that he won this award for the Wranglers and talked about that moment when he got the news. Ciona said:
“When Brad [Pascall] and Sutts [Brett Sutter] took me in yesterday, it was cool. They said it themselves. I said it to them. I was like, I just really take pride in it, I have a lot of fun doing it and it’s my favourite thing to do in my season. And Brad was like, well, it’s good to have the recognition as well. He’s right on that 100%. It feels good for that but it’s just something I enjoy doing and to get recognition is cool but it’s just something to really take pride in and will continue to do forever.”
Lucas Ciona is a featured player on many of the social posts the Wranglers share on their community engagement days and has formed special bonds and memories he will carry with him for life. When asked about some of his favourite moments, he said:
“There’s quite a few. I remember we went and did I think it was the kids cancer ball hockey and I remember there’s a family there, I’m not going to say their name but I remember their son from the year prior when we first did it and it was just pretty fun. He recognized me and the family as well. I just remember that was a really good feeling just to continue to know the same person a year after and build a proper relationship with somebody. So that was really just special.”
Most of the team tends to get involved in events like these, but they don’t have to commit to as many as Ciona does. He enjoys that aspect of it too, where he can share this experience with his new and existing teammates and make memories alongside them. He mentioned a lot of his teammates could be in the same spot as him, earning this award. Ciona said:
“I think it’s one of the most important things we do honestly. We have a name for ourselves, we built a name for ourselves and I think it’s the most rewarding and best thing we can do with our time. I know Kinger (Carter King), and Mack (Simon Mack) and quite a few other guys like Cheech (Nick Cicek) as well, who are all new to our team this year, they’re a big part of doing this. All these programs and things like that. For me, it’s really cool seeing other guys come and be a part of it and joining the community of Calgary and spending their time in good ways and giving back to other people.”
Some things are bigger than hockey and not only does the Flames organization do an exceptional job giving back to the community, the players also make these moments that much more special. Lucas Ciona understands the difference community work makes even if it seems small in the moment. He mentioned the sports drive and the kids cancer events as some of his favourites. He said:
“It lights up those kids’ days and it brings smiles to other people. It helps families out and I think it kind of relieves a little bit of the stress some of those families have. Just to be a part of their day and give them two three hours of time is really rewarding and it’s a really nice feeling to do.”
The Wranglers are proud of the way Lucas Ciona presents himself in the community and Ciona humbly accepts this award. The purpose of his work is not to ultimately win this award, but he is well worth the recognition for volunteering his time in this season and last season.
