To the surprise of no one, it appears that Macklin Celebrini will be the San Jose Sharks’ next captain.
According to San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng, it’s all but certain that Celebrini will be the newest captain of the California-based team.
Drafted first overall in the 2024 NHL draft, Celebrini took a massive step forward in 2025-26, scoring 45 goals and 115 points in 82 games, up from 25 goals and 63 points in 70 games in his rookie season. Not only did he lead the Sharks in both categories by a country mile, but he finished fourth in points, only behind Connor McDavid, Nikita Kucherov, and Nathan MacKinnon.
After a few years of rebuilding, the Sharks just missed making the post-season for the first time since 2018-19. They did that without a captain, as it remained vacant after Logan Couture’s retirement.
That said, Celebrini was one of five players to wear an “A” on his chest, joined by Mario Ferraro, Barclay Goodrow, Tyler Toffoli, and Alexander Wennberg. Assuming he’s named as the team’s captain before the start of the season, Celebrini will be the 13th captain in team history.
Sharks prospect Yaroslav Korostelyov set to come to North America
According to Hockey News Hub’s Jeremy Garrett, Sharks prospect Yaroslav Korostelyov will terminate his contract in Russia’s Junior Hockey League (MHL) and join the Sharks’ organization.
Korostelyov, 21, was drafted in the seventh round by the Sharks in 2024. He spent the 2025-26 season with St. Petersburg SKA Jr. in Russia’s junior league, finishing the year with a .917 save percentage and 2.22 goals against average in 20 games. That was down from his .936 save percentage and 1.53 goals against average in 27 games in 2024-25.
The St. Petersburg product won the league’s cup with the team in 2023-24 and also made his professional debut this past season, allowing five goals on 26 shots in the lone game he played.
Joe Sakic confident Cale Makar will be extended
One of the game’s best defencemen may not reach free agency, as Colorado Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic believes that Cale Makar will be extended before the season begins.
The Calgary product has been one of, if not the best, defencemen in hockey in the 2020s. In 2025-26, Makar scored 20 goals and 79 points in 75 games, which is widely considered an off-year. In both 2023-24 and 2024-25, the 27-year-old scored 90+ points and even reached the 30-goal plateau, something that isn’t done by defencemen a whole lot anymore.
He’s also a playoff performer, scoring 26 goals and 90 points in 90 career post-season games. Makar was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 2022, scoring eight goals and 29 points in 20 games, helping the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup. The Calgarian has also won two Norris Trophies in his nine-season career.
Makar is about to embark on the sixth and final year of his contract where he earns $9 million annually and has been eligible for an extension since July 1.
