One of the Calgary Flames’ international imports is headed back home. Per the team’s site, Swedish defender Marcus Hogstrom is returning to Djurgardens IF for the 2019-20 season.

Hogstrom, 30, signed with the Flames for the 2018-19 season but came into main camp injured and never really got his legs under him. He only ended up playing 12 games with the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat, notching a pair of assists. He was one of the 10 players recalled by the Flames for the playoffs, but obviously wasn’t around long enough to really even practice much.

His signing was announced last summer on the same date the team inked German free agent Yasin Ehliz. Ehliz had a similarly rough training camp, played four games with Stockton, then had his contract terminated so he could return home to Germany to play out the season in Munich. It was that kind of season for the Flames’ European signings.

Hogstrom will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Google Translate is pretty dodgy with the syntax of the Swedish language sometimes, but our understanding is that Djurgardens IF retained Hogstrom’s SHL rights when he went to North America and other SHL teams have until June 15 to express interest in him. By all accounts, it sounds like he’ll be back with his old team going forward.
