Mark Giordano and Travis Hamonic are probably out for awhile

Calgary Flames interim head coach Geoff Ward joined Dean “Boomer” Molberg and company on the Sportsnet 960 The Fan morning show on Tuesday morning. One of the big topics that Ward was asked about was the injury status of Mark Giordano and Travis Hamonic.
Asked for an update, here’s what Ward had to say:
The most truthful thing I can tell you is week to week right now. I know Gio the last time he had this injury came back quickly in six weeks. It’s two now. He’s healing extremely well. Travis is a little bit slower due to the injury he’s got. It’s coming. He’s starting to be less painful every day. I would think both guys are going to be available at some point down the stretch here. But right now it’s a week by week thing based on how it’s responding to the rehab, and both guys are in here working extremely hard because they want to get back out there.
The implication here is that Giordano is two weeks into what is potentially a six week recovery – placing his return somewhere in mid-March. Given that Hamonic’s recovery is “a little slower,” placing his return sometime after Giordano’s probably isn’t too much of a stretch.
That means that the Flames are probably going to be without two of their top four blueliners for the better part of another month. With the trade deadline looming on Monday afternoon, this may put the onus on general manager Brad Treliving to spend a pick acquiring some defensive depth to keep the Flames in the playoff hunt.
The Flames are back in action on Friday night when they host the Boston Bruins.
