The Calgary Flames lost in overtime to Dallas on Thursday night, but one of their players will also be getting a bit of a hit to their wallet. Forward Matthew Tkachuk has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable by the CBA, for high-sticking Dallas defender John Klingberg in the third period.
Here’s the release from the NHL:
Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for high-sticking Dallas Stars defenseman John Klingberg during NHL Game No. 154 in Calgary on Thursday, Nov. 4, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.
The incident occurred at 7:40 of the third period. Tkachuk was assessed a minor penalty for high-sticking.
The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
Under the CBA’s supplemental discipline clauses, the Department of Player Safety can levy additional penalties (even if there was a call on the play) if they feel a player’s actions were particularly reckless or dangerous. Apparently, Tkachuk’s actions merited such an additional penalty.
