The Flames’ best goals of 2025-26: Blake Coleman sets up Mikael Backlund for breakaway goal

There weren’t a lot of positives from this past Calgary Flames’ season, but there were a handful of great goals scored.

The best of the 208 goals the Flames scored, the lowest of any team, came courtesy of the longest-tenured player. Captain Mikael Backlund has already appeared once on this list, but his goal against the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 24 is the best of the bunch.

In Manitoba early in the season, the Flames were down 3-1 with about six minutes remaining in the second period. On a zone entry, Samuel Honzek won the puck on the boards and found Blake Coleman in stride.

With the Jets’ defender over-committing, it opened up two-on-one of sorts, with Backlund not far behind. Logan Stanley attempted to close Coleman’s space, but the Texas product protected the puck, spun around, and fired a dart of a pass to Backlund for a breakaway.

With a full head of steam and some time, Backlund faked backhand to get the Jets’ netminder to bite. On his edges, Backlund was able to make a slight turn to his left and deposit the puck into the gaping net before Stanley had a chance to recover.

The pass was fantastic, but the goal was even better. This was just Backlund’s second of the season, with the Flames’ captain going on to add 15 more to finish with 17 goals and 43 points. At the age of 37, Backlund is going to be a vital leader for the Flames’ next great core.

Ultimately, the Flames fell 5-3 in this game, dropping their record to 1-7-1 after beginning the season with a comeback victory over the Edmonton Oilers. This stretch, as well as losing three of the next four games, sank any chance of the Flames repeating the 2024-25 season, thus kicking off what should be a rebuild.

Still, it was a pretty darn nice goal.
