Calgary Flames centre Nazem Kadri scored a … well, unique goal in the second period of Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
With the Flames trailing the Bolts by a 4-1 score, Kadri suddenly found himself on a partial breakaway in the Tampa Bay zone after defenceman J.J. Moser stumbled while chasing a Calgary dump-in.
Kadri leapt over the sliding Moser but lost his footing momentarily as he landed, transitioning into a quasi-pirouette before gathering the puck in the low slot.
Then, just as veteran Lightning defender Ryan McDonagh attempted to knock the puck away, Kadri uncorked a quick wrister that beat Andrei Vasilevskiy to make it a 4-2 game.
Jonathan Huberdeau and Kevin Bahl recorded the assists on Kadri’s highlight-reel tally:
Kadri now ranks second on the Flames with 10 goals and 19 points through 29 games and two periods this season. The 34-year-old forward is in the third year of the seven-year, $7 million AAV contract he signed with the Flames as an unrestricted free agent back in 2022.
Playing primarily on a line with Huberdeau and Martin Pospisil, Kadri has started to settle into a more consistent offensive rhythm in recent weeks. He has points in 10 of his last 13 games, with five goals and six assists over that stretch.
The Flames fell behind 4-1 midway through the second period after the Lightning scored four goals in succession. However, just under three minutes after Kadri brought Calgary back within two, Connor Zary added his seventh goal of the year to make it a 4-3 game.
Nikita Kucherov, Jake Guentzel, Brayden Point, and Anthony Cirelli all tallied during Tampa Bay’s run of four consecutive goals, while Huberdeau scored one of his own in the first period. The 4-3 score held into the second intermission.
The Flames entered Thursday’s game trying to build upon their 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators two days earlier. They currently rank fifth in the Pacific Division with a 14-10-5 record and 33 points through 29 games.
