NHL Notebook: Jason Robertson signs one-year deal with Stars

One of the top trade candidates this off-season is now off the market.
On Tuesday, the Dallas Stars announced that they’ve signed restricted free agent Jason Robertson to a one-year deal worth $12 million. It’s worth noting that Robertson is now slated for free agency next summer.
The fact that Robertson hasn’t been signed to a long-term contract is a bit surprising. The Arcadia, California product is a three-time 40-goal scorer, scoring 79 or more points in each of the last three seasons.
This past season, Robertson scored 45 goals and 96 points in 82 games, his second best season of his career following his 46-goal, 109-point performance in 2022-23. Since 2021-22, Robertson has scored 196 goals and 444 points, both are the ninth-most in the National Hockey League during that stretch.
By signing a one-year deal, the rumours surrounding Robertson’s future likely won’t quiet down heading into the season. He’s eligible to sign an extension on Jan. 1.
Patrick Kane signs two-year deal with Blackhawks
In one of the more surprising moves so far this off-season, the Chicago Blackhawks signed three-time Stanley Cup champion Patrick Kane to a two-year deal worth $16 million.

Kane, 37, won his three Cups with the Blackhawks in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Likely a future Hall of Famer, Kane was traded ahead of the 2023 trade deadline to the New York Rangers, where he played just 19 regular season games and seven post-season games.
The winger’s last three seasons have been spent with his third Original Six team, the Detroit Red Wings. He scored back-to-back 20-goal seasons in 2023-24 and 2024-25, but scored just 16 goals last season. That said, his skill still plays as he nears 40, finishing 2025-26 with 57 points in 67 games.
It’s still a confusing move for the rebuilding Blackhawks, but not quite as confusing as trading the fourth-overall pick for Bowen Byram.
Blue Jackets and Jet Greaves avoid arbitration
The Columbus Blue Jackets avoided arbitration with netminder Jet Greaves, signing the Cambridge, Ontario product to a three-year deal with an AAV of $5 million.

The two parties were set to go to arbitration on Thursday, with Greaves filing for $7.5 million and the Blue Jackets for $2.8 million. In the end, they met in the middle and the netminder will get a chance to shine as the team’s No.1 starter.
Undrafted, it took a while for the 25-year-old to earn a proper look in the NHL. His 2021-22 season was split between the American Hockey League and ECHL, then he spent all but 59 minutes in the AHL during the 2022-23 season. The following season, Greaves played nine games in the NHL, then 11 during the 2024-25 season.
Finally, Greaves emerged as the team’s starter, posting a .908 save percentage and 2.60 goals against average in 55 games. His save percentage ranked 11th in the league, with only two players ahead of him playing 55 or more games.
