With the 2026-27 National Hockey League regular season starting in just a couple of days, free agents are starting to come off the board.
The most notable recent signing belongs to the New York Islanders, as they announced on Sunday that they’ve signed Logan Stanley to a one-year deal with a cap hit of $1.5 million.
Stanley was selected 18th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2016 NHL Draft. Breaking into the league in 2020-21, Stanley didn’t play a full-season for his first four years, with his career-high in games played coming in 2021-22. That season, his sophomore season, saw him score a goal and 13 points in 58 games.
The 2024-25 season was the season Stanley established himself as an NHL regular. In 63 games, Stanley scored a goal and 14 points in 63 games. His breakout season came just last season, scoring nine goals and 21 points in 59 games with the Jets. Before the trade deadline, the left-shot defenceman was traded to the Buffalo Sabres, where he played 17 more games and picked up five assists.
With the Islanders expected to be on the outside looking in, Stanley is a candidate to be flipped ahead of the 2027 deadline yet again.

Nick Blankenburg signs one-year contract with Maple Leafs

Also on Sunday, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that they’ve signed defenceman Nick Blankenburg to a one-year deal that carries a cap hit of $1.4 million
Blankenburg, 28, signed a professional tryout with the Maple Leafs prior to the start of training camp. His 2025-26 season was split between the Nashville Predators and Colorado Avalanche, scoring eight goals and 24 points in 61 points, adding a goal in five playoff games with the Avalanche.
This will be Blankenburg’s sixth season in the NHL. Signed by the Columbus Blue Jackets out of college following the 2021-22 season, the Washington, Michigan product spent parts of three seasons with the Blue Jackets organization, before signing with the Predators during the 2024 off-season.

David Pastrňák named as Bruins captain

On Sunday morning, the Boston Bruins named Czech forward David Pastrňák as their 28th captain in franchise history.
Pastrňák has been a life-long Bruin, selected 25th overall back in the 2014 draft. Over the course of 12 seasons, the 30-year-old has scored 420 goals and 933 points in 833 games, reaching the 40+ goal plateau five times. In 2019-20, his 48 goals led the NHL, earning the Rocket Richard trophy.
Three years later, Pastrňák reached the 60+ goal plateau, finishing the season with 61 goals and a career-high 113 points. He’s reached the 100-point mark in each of the last four seasons.
The Bruins didn’t have a captain last season, as Brad Marchand was traded to the Florida Panthers midway through the 2024-25 season. By being an Original Six team, you know that the Bruins have had some notable captains. Pastrňák joins Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chára, Joe Thornton, Jason Allison, and Raymond Bourque as captains since the turn of the millennium.
