NHL Notebook: Canucks spin two big trades on the same day

Trades, trades, trades!
There were a series of three trades late Friday and early Saturday. The first of which came from the Vancouver Canucks, as they traded J.T. Miller, Erik Brännström, and Jackson Dorrington to the New York Rangers for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and the Rangers 2025 first-round pick, top 13 protected.
Last season, J.T. Miller scored 37 goals and 103 points, a career-high, as he helped the Vancouver Canucks finish first in the Pacific Division. So far this season, he has nine goals and 35 points in 40 games, taking a month-long absence due to personal reasons.
However, the Canucks haven’t been doing nearly as well this season, as they have a 23-18-10 record with 56 points, one back of the Calgary Flames for the final wild card spot. It’s clear from reports that there were issues in the locker room, and perhaps trading Miller will help the Canucks in the long term.
Still, this is a pretty shallow return for a player who had 100 points last season. Chytil isn’t a bad player, as he has 11 goals and 20 points in 41 games this season after missing all but 10 games in 2023-24, but he’ll never produce like Miller.
As for the first-round pick, well, the Canucks made another move shortly after.
Canucks trade with the Penguins
Later in the evening, the Canucks traded the Rangers 2025 first-round pick, Vinny Desharnais, Danton Heinen, and Melvin Fernström to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor.
Trade details: To #Canucks: Marcus Pettersson, Drew O’Connor To #LetsGoPens: 2025 Cond. 1st Round Pick (from #NYR), Vinny Desharnais, Danton Heinen and Melvin Fernstrom.
Pettersson was one of the better defencemen available before the trade deadline. This season, he has three goals and 18 points in 47 games after scoring a career-high four goals and 30 points in 82 games last season. He’ll help a Canucks defence core that has struggled this season, aside from Quinn Hughes of course.
O’Connor was great in 2023-24 for the Penguins, scoring 16 goals and 33 points in 79 games. However, he has just six goals and 16 points in 53 games this season. Heinen and Desharnais both signed as free agents this past off-season but haven’t panned out well for the Canucks while Fernström was their third-round selection in the 2024 draft.
Sharks trade Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci to the Stars
Another defenceman is off the board, as the San Jose Sharks traded Cody Ceci along with Mikael Granlund to the Dallas Stars for a 2025 first-round pick and a conditional fourth-round pick originally belonging to the Winnipeg Jets. If the Stars make the Stanley Cup Finals, the pick becomes Dallas’ third-round pick in 2025.
Trade details confirmed: To #TexasHockey: Mikeal Granlund, Cody Ceci To #SJSharks: 2025 DAL 1st Round Pick, Cond. 2025 WPG 4th Round Pick that can upgrade to 2025 3rd Round if Dallas advances to 2025 Stanley Cup Final. First to report: @KevinWeekes, @DarrenDreger with details.
Granlund has been terrific for the Sharks this season, scoring 15 goals and 45 points in 52 games as the Sharks have found a way to score this year. Ceci was acquired in the off-season from the Edmonton Oilers and has four goals and 15 points in 54 games.
Notably, the Sharks didn’t retain any salary as they were unable to do so. This season, their three retention spots are being used on Brent Burns, Erik Karlsson, and Tomáš Hertl. The Stars were able to trade for these two cap hits because Tyler Seguin is currently on the Long-Term Injured Reserve.
