The first suspension of the regular season has been handed out.
On Friday, the league announced that New York Islanders’ forward Jonathan Drouin has been suspended for one game after cross-checking Pittsburgh Penguins’ forward Connor Dewar in the face.
The play happened late in the Penguins’ 4-3 victory on Thursday. In a scrum beside the Penguins’ net, Dewar cross-checked Drouin in the shoulder, who fired back with a slash to the leg. Dewar hit him with another cross-check to the shoulder before Drouin went up high with his contract.
Although this is the first time Drouin has been suspended for anything in the National Hockey League, he did receive a fine during the 2021-22 season for a cross-check. He’ll miss Saturday’s home opener against the Washington Capitals.
This is the first regular season suspension, but both J.J. Moser and Scott Sabourin are serving a suspension for their actions in the most recent Battle of Florida.
The San Jose Sharks blow late lead
The San Jose Sharks held on to a late lead against the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday evening. With under two minutes left in the game, the Golden Knights had their net empty, trailing 3-2, but the Sharks were unable to score. Shortly after, the Golden Knights dumped the puck into the zone.
Unfortunately for the Sharks, it wasn’t into the corner, but into the back of the net as the puck took a bounce past netminder Alex Nedeljkovic. That wasn’t all bad, as the Sharks still got at least one point, but then Nedeljkovic was caught in no-man’s land trying to play the puck during overtime, leading to an easy Golden Knights game-winner.
Alex Nedeljkovic.... 😭
“Gotta find a way to move on somehow, go back, get back at it tomorrow, work on fielding pop flies and whatnot like that in practice.”
The Sharks may not be a good hockey team, but their chaotic nature sure makes them fun.
Oilers sign Jack Roslovic
During the Calgary Flames’ season opener against the Edmonton Oilers, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Oilers signed right-shot forward Jack Roslovic. It wasn’t much longer before the other Alberta team made it official with a press release.
In the end, Roslovic signed a one-year deal worth $1.5 million with a full no-trade clause until the start of November. After that, he’ll give the Oilers a four-team trade list. It’s a big get for the Oilers, as the Columbus, Ohio native scored 22 goals, 21 of which were scored even strength.
He’s a top-six forward who offers versatility on a rather inexpensive contract.
