One of the league’s best young defenceman has signed long-term.
On Monday, it was announced that the Montréal Canadiens and Lane Hutson had agreed to an eight-year deal worth $8.85 million beginning in the 2026-27 season.
While it may seem like a lot for a defenceman entering his sophomore season, Huston has already shown he’[s among the league’s best young defenders. Drafted 62nd overall in the 2022 draft by the Canadiens, Hutson scored six goals and 66 points in 82 games last season, edging out Macklin Celebrini and Dustin Wolf for the Calder Trophy.
At just 21 years old, Hutson figures to be a part of the young Canadiens core for a long time. They also have 25-year-old right-shot defenceman, Noah Dobson, under contract until the end of the 2032-33 season.

Jacob Markström out for a couple of weeks

On Wednesday, New Jersey Devils’ head coach Sheldon Keefe noted that former Calgary Flames’ netminder Jacob Markström will be out for a couple of weeks due to a lower-body injury.
The incident happened on Monday after Markström replaced Jake Allen. He was able to complete the game, a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets, but looked in discomfort getting off the ice.
Traded in the 2024 off-season, Markström had a .900 save percentage and 2.50 goals against average in 49 games last season. Through the 35-year-old’s three games in 2025-26, he has an .845 save percentage and 3.89 goals against average.

Brady Tkachuk out for a month

Another player in the Eastern Conference who’ll miss some action is Brady Tkachuk, as he’s expected to be out for about a month with an undisclosed injury.
The incident occurred in the Ottawa Senators’ game against the Nashville Predators on Monday. It looks to be a hand injury sustained in a scrum after the whistle. It’s worth noting that surgery on whatever the injury is, hasn’t been ruled out.
It’s a big loss for the Senators, as Tkachuk has three assists through three games. Last season, he scored 29 goals and 55 points, and had a career-best season in 2022-23 when he scored 35 goals and 83 points.

Dmitry Kulikov out long-term

The reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, already have injuries piling up. Aleksander Barkov will be out for a while, as will Matthew Tkachuk.  Well, defenceman Dmitry Kulikov will be out for five months after undergoing surgery to repair a labral tear.
Kulikov suffered the injury last Thursday after a collision with Philadelphia Flyers’ forward Bobby Brink. If all goes well, the defenceman should be back toward the end of the season.
