The Vancouver Canucks have locked up Marcus Pettersson long term.
On Wednesday, the Canucks announced that they agreed to terms with Pettersson on a six-year deal worth $5.5 million a season.
Less than a week ago, the Canucks made two trade. First, they traded J.T. Miller and others to the New York Rangers for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and a 2025 conditional first-round pick. The Canucks then used that pick with Danton Heine, Vincent Desharnais, and Melvin Fernström to acquire Pettersson and Drew O’Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Since the trade, Pettersson has been held pointless in two games. For the season, he has three goals and 18 points in 49 games. The trade and signing have created a log jam of left-shot defenceman for the Canucks and Carson Soucy looks to be the odd man out, being brought up in recent trade rumours. Is he a fit for the Flames? Potentially.
Ryan Hartman appeals 10-game suspension
On Monday, Minnesota Wild’s Ryan Hartman was suspended for 10 games for pushing Ottawa Senators’ forward Tim Stützle’s head into the ice on the faceoff. The NHLPA announced on Wednesday that they were appealing the suspension on behalf of Hartman.
The NHLPA has filed an appeal on behalf of Ryan Hartman regarding the NHL’s disciplinary decision to suspend him 10 games.
The 10-game suspension is the lengthiest given by the league since the 2018-19 season when Tom Wilson was suspended for 14 games, albeit it was originally 20 before being appealed. Hartman is a repeat offender, being suspended twice in the 2023-24 season and once in the 2022-23 season.
When a suspension of six games or more is appealed, there’s the option of it going to an arbitrator after the appeal to Gary Bettman. Hartman will almost certainly remain suspended, but it becomes a question of how long will he be suspended after the arbitration process is done.
Wild claim Vinnie Hinostroza
Speaking of the Minnesota Wild, they claimed Vinnie Hinostroza off waivers from the Nashville Predators.
Minnesota claims Hinostroza
Hinnestroza was drafted in the sixth round of the 2012 draft by the Chicago Blackhawks and made his National Hockey League debut in 2015-16 where he was held pointless in seven games. The forward became a somewhat regular in 2016-17, scoring six goals and 14 points in 49 games, followed by seven goals and 25 points in the next season. His career-high came in 2018-19 with the Arizona Coyotes where he scored 16 goals and 39 points in 72 games.
Over his career, he’s played for the Blackhawks, Coyotes, Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Predators. This season with the Predators, he has two assists in 13 games and hasn’t been an NHL regular since 2021-22 where he scored 13 goals and 25 points. In 26 games in the American Hockey League this season, Hinostroza has 11 goals and 33 points.
Funnily enough, his first three seasons with the Blackhawks were played alongside Ryan Hartman, the player he’ll be replacing for the next 10 or so games.
