The National Hockey League will announce the Calgary Flames’ quarter-century teams on Jan. 11, 2025.
The league made the announcement in a press release over the weekend:
The NHL will honor its best players from the past 25 years in a multi-phased Quarter-Century Team selection and celebration. The campaign will be rolled out in three phases, with each accompanied by a robust content campaign across all NHL platforms to reflect selections and encourage fans to participate in the debate.Starting at the Discover NHL Winter Classic later this month and continuing daily through January, the NHL will reveal each Club’s First and Second Quarter-Century Teams. Both the First Team and Second Team will consist of three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender. Each Club’s First and Second Quarter-Century Teams will be selected by a panel of media, retired players and executives specific to that Club. Players under consideration for selection are those who have appeared in a game for the respective franchises since Jan. 1, 2000.
Because of the focus on the past quarter-century means that we won’t be seeing any representation from the illustrious Atlanta Flames, and we also won’t see anybody from the Flames’ 1980s glory days… or the 1990s Young Guns vintage, for that matter. So we’re going to warn everyone in advance: don’t be expecting to see names like Mike Vernon, Al MacInnis, Paul Reinhart, Tom Lysiak, Kent Nilsson, Joe Nieuwendyk or Theoren Fleury on the Quarter-Century Teams.
That said: the Flames have had some pretty good performances from some pretty good players since 2000, so there will be a lot of players to choose from – and debates to be had – when the Flames teams are announced on Jan. 11. We’re willing to bet that Miikka Kiprusoff will be on one of the Flames teams. But who will be joining him?
The rest of the NHL’s 31 teams will have their own Quarter Century lineups announced between Dec. 30 and Jan. 31. The league has decided to do separate teams for the Utah Hockey Club and the Arizona Coyotes, and it’ll also be interesting to see how the teams for the Seattle Kraken shake out.
