This week, the league announced the player from every NHL team who will be heading to Toronto for the All-Star Weekend on Feb. 1-3. With the rule in place that ensures every team will have at least one All-Star (selected by the league), it gives every fan a chance to tune in during All-Star Weekend to watch a player from their team showcase their talent.
For the Pacific Power Rankings this week, we are going to take a look at the players that the NHL selected from the Pacific Division. For this, we will only be highlighting the players selected by the league and ignoring the fan voted players for the sake of not having to write about 5+ players for one team (*cough* Vancouver *cough*).
So without further ado, let’s take a look at who’s booking a flight to Toronto from the Pacific Division this year:
(All stats collected from MoneyPuck.)
1. Vancouver Canucks (29-11-4, 62 points)
Last week: 1 (-)
Record this week: 3-0-1
A 5-1-1 road trip concluded on Monday afternoon in a tight 4-3 shootout loss at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Despite the loss, it is hard to dispute that the Vancouver Canucks have been the most consistent team in the division so far this year with Vegas and Los Angeles currently both on a bit of a slide. Currently with a fairly comfy cushion in the Pacific standings at 62 points, the Canucks will look to continue their success with a five game home stand heading into the All-Star break.
It will be interesting to see what the Canucks management will do this trade deadline. Will they wait to see if this can be sustained for more than one season? Or, will they push all their chips into the pile to set themselves up for a playoff run while they are hot?
All-Star selection: Quinn Hughes
There were a lot of candidates that could’ve been the pick for the Canucks to go to the All-Star Game in February. Lucky for the Canucks, the fan vote selected four more players (Pettersson, Miller, Boeser, Demko) to join their their captain. Even without the help of the fan vote, Hughes was the clear pick to represent Vancouver.
Currently leading all defencemen in scoring with 51 points, it looks like it is going to be an exciting two horse race in the Norris hunt between Hughes and Avalanche superstar Cale Makar.
2. Edmonton Oilers (23-15-1, 47 points)
Last week: 4 (+2)
Record this week: 3-0-0
It’s deja vu in Oil Country as the Edmonton Oilers extended their winning streak to a franchise record 10 games, surpassing the nine gamer they achieved earlier this season. It was a bit of a grind for the team to reach the 10 game mark as they were involved in three consecutive one goal games against Chicago, Detroit, and Montreal on an eastern road trip this week.
Edmonton hasn’t lost a game in the young 2024 year, and that comes as a result of a huge turnaround from goaltender Stuart Skinner. Skinner is currently leading all goaltenders with more than three starts this year in goals against average (1.25) and has a 0.957 save percentage over that period.
All-Star selection: Connor McDavid
For as long as Connor McDavid is on the roster, it will be hard to dispute against him being the All-Star pick for the Oilers. McDavid has really come on since his early injury and has fought his way back into the top 10 in points. He might not end up beating his historic 153 point season of last year, but his 57 points in 37 games is looking more like the McDavid that we are used to seeing than the one we saw in the early goings this year.
3. Vegas Golden Knights (25-14-5, 55 points)
Last week: 3 (-)
Record this week: 2-2-0
The injuries keep piling up for the Golden Knights, with potentially their biggest hit to the roster coming on Thursday night when Jack Eichel had to leave the game with an undisclosed injury.
Even with the growing list of injuries to the Golden Knights, they should definitely not be taken lightly as the season matures and they get some of their big guns back. They know how to win in so many different ways and if they can do it without their studs, it’ll be a scary thought once they get back to being healthy.
All-Star selection: Jack Eichel
After suffering the injury and missing the rest of the week, Jack Eichel’s All-Star status might be in jeopardy. Eichel is having a great season with 44 points in 42 games and looks like he was on track to break his previous career high of 82 points before going down.
You have to assume it will be Mark Stone replacing Eichel if worst comes to worst who is having a pretty good season himself, including potting a hat trick this week against the Predators.
4. Seattle Kraken (19-15-9, 47 points)
Last week: 5 (+1)
Record this week: 3-1-0
It has been the Joey Daccord show for the Seattle Kraken during the run they have been on for the last month or so. Monday’s 3-0 loss against the Pittsburgh was the first time since December 10 that his team didn’t record at least a point with him between the pipes. Since being called up from Coachella Valley, Daccord has taken the league by storm, running a 2.28 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.
Tied with another surging team, the Edmonton Oilers, for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, Seattle has given themselves a legitimate shot at making a push for the playoffs. One thing I worry that could come back to bite the Kraken is their nine overtime losses so far. In a three point league where making ground is tough to do, those nine points could be important down the stretch.
All-Star selection: Oliver Bjorkstrand
If he had been with the team and played the way he has for more time, I strongly believe this spot would go to Daccord, or even team leader in points Vince Dunn but Oliver Bjorkstrand is the one that will skip his vacation and join the All-Star roster this year.
Nothing against Bjorkstrand, who leads the forward group with 34 points in 43 games, one behind Dunn for the team lead, but there was definitely some more exciting players left on the board for Seattle.
5. Los Angeles Kings (21-11-8, 50 points)
Last week: 2 (-3)
Record this week: 1-1-2
The Los Angeles Kings got their first win of 2024 on Monday against the Carolina Hurricanes and put an end to their brutal eight game losing streak. The win also marks the first time since late December that they have been able to score more than three goals. While they still have some games in hand on the teams above them in the standings, the gap is closing and they haven’t been able to make up any valuable ground in the meantime.
Getting knocked out of the playoff race still seems like a bit of a stretch, but the fact that Seattle, Edmonton, and even Calgary are starting to piece their seasons together and making a push has to put some pressure on the Kings to turn this thing around sooner rather than later.
All-Star selection: Cam Talbot
The question going into the season was whether the veteran goaltender was going to be able to keep them afloat. So far this season, Cam Talbot has been that and so much more for his team and has booked his trip to the All-Star game.
At 36 years of age, Talbot has rejuvenated his career in Los Angeles and his numbers are backing it up. A .918 save percentage would be his best since playing with the Flames in 2019-20 and a 9.6 goals saved above expected lands him in the top 10 in the league in the category.
6. Calgary Flames (20-18-5, 45 points)
Last week: 6 (-)
Record this week: 3-0-0
The up and down season continued this week for the Calgary Flames, this week on the incline. All three games were won in dominant fashion, including an impressive 3-1 performance over the Golden Knights on Saturday evening.
The Flames are now only a few points out of the final Wild Card spot in a fairly wide open Western Conference. Is there a world where the Flames can sell and stock up on assets while also continue to be in the playoff hunt?
All-Star selection: Elias Lindholm
Lindholm was one of the more head scratching picks for this year’s All-Star Game given some of the other performances that we have seen this year. Lindholm currently sits fourth on the team in scoring and is centering Huberdeau and Sharangovich on the first line.
I really would’ve loved to see Blake Coleman get the nod for the career season he is having. Coleman leads the team in points with 37 and is also holding it down on defence with a +23 plus/minus rating.
7. Anaheim Ducks (15-27-1, 31 points)
Last week: 7 (-)
Record this week: 2-2-0
Things could be turning around injury wise for the Anaheim Ducks as Leo Carlsson drew back into the lineup on Monday for the first time since Dec. 21. While Trevor Zegras and Pavel Mintyukov are still sidelined with their respective injuries, the Ducks scratched and clawed their way to a .500 record this week including taking down a very strong Panthers team in a matinee yesterday.
We haven’t really gotten to see a fully healthy Ducks team this season, but it will be fun to watch once they get healthy again and Cutter Gauthier wraps up his season with Boston College and joins the team later on.
All-Star selection: Frank Vatrano
On pace for 40 goals this year, Frank Vatrano is a nice selection here and deserving of being an All-Star for Anaheim. With 21 goals, Vatrano leads his team in points halfway through the season.
Without the injuries that Anaheim has faced, who knows if there would be another candidate for the honor, mainly eyeing Mason McTavish who has 27 points over 36 games, but Vatrano potentially being a trade target this deadline could give him a shot to do some networking with other teams in Toronto as well.
8. San Jose Sharks (10-31-3, 23 points)
Last week: 8 (-)
Record this week: 1-3-0
A 7-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs to start the week just about sums up how things have been going for the Sharks this season. Their 24 points puts them dead last in the league and it isn’t going to get better for them. It’s time to pack it in for the Sharks and move on to next season, which will almost certainly include a top prospect coming to inject at least some excitement into Sharks fans.
All-star selection: Tomas Hertl
If the NHL didn’t have the rule of team representation, the San Jose Sharks wouldn’t have anyone going to Toronto next month. Nonetheless, they are sending their leading scorer this year, forward Tomas Hertl. Hertl’s team leading 13 goals and 30 points aren’t terrible considering the talent, or lack thereof around him.
