Playing their fifth road game in a row on Sunday afternoon, the Calgary Flames kept it simple. They scored on a first power play play and then played smart hockey the rest of the way en route to a 3-0 victory over the Florida Panthers.

The Rundown

The first period was pretty even, but the Flames managed to take the lead off a power play goal. Elias Lindholm found Johnny Gaudreau with a superb cross-zone feed, and Gaudreau walked in and beat Sam Montembeault with a wrist shot to make it 1-0 Flames.
Shots were 10-10 and scoring chances 8-5 Flames in the first period.
The Flames added insurance early in the second. Derek Ryan’s redirect of a Mark Giordano shot went wide, but Ryan retrieved it and found Milan Lucic out front for a tap-in to make it 2-0 Flames.
The Panthers pressed for the rest of the period but the Flames held them off. Shots were 16-6 Panthers and scoring chances 10-6 Panthers in the second period.
The Flames extended their lead early in the third period. TJ Brodie’s point shot found a way though traffic, perhaps glancing off a Panthers’ defender, and beat Montembeault to make it 3-0.
Shots were 13-11 Flames and scoring chances 8-3 Flames in the third period.

Why the Flames Won

Playing their second game in as many days against a team doing the precise same thing, they won battles and executed well on both sides of the puck. It wasn’t as impressive as their win over Boston, but it was still very structured and composed.

Red Warrior

Gaudreau was excellent and noticeable in all three zones, so he gets the nod. But Cam Talbot and Giordano were also standouts.

The Turning Point

Let’s go with the Lucic goal, which gave the road side some much-needed breathing room.

This and That

The Drive to 95 (Points)

The Flames have 75 points. A 95 point playoff pace through 67 games pro-rates to 77.7 points, so they’re 2.5 points off a likely playoff pace with 15 games to go.

Up Next

The Flames (34-26-7) are headed home. They’re back in action on Wednesday night when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets.
