Quips and Quotes: Flames beat Maple Leafs 3-1

The Calgary Flames beat the Toronto Maple Leafs by a 3-1 score on Monday night. Here are selected reactions from players and coaches following the game.
The phantom goal
Based on the posted post-game comments, Flames head coach Bill Peters seems as confused as everyone else about the whistle following the Maple Leafs not scoring late in the third period. At the time, the Flames had an odd-man rush as the Leafs stood around celebrating.
“It’ll be an interesting explanation tomorrow to our general manager from the league,” said Peters. “And then we’ll enlighten the world on what really happened.”
The most likely culprit will see the officials citing Rule 85.1 (“Puck Out of Play”) or 85.2 (“Puck Unplayable”), with the officials probably arguing that the puck was wedged in the netting on the back of the Flames net long enough to justify a whistle. Granted, the puck was never wedged, but that seems a likely explanation based on the face-off following the play happening at center – the actions of the attacking team (the Leafs) caused the whistle, so the draw happened at center.
Given that none of the officials (on or off the ice) signaled a goal, it was a strange situation.
Defensive improvements
The Flames weren’t perfect on the night, but they kept the defensive breakdowns to a minimum. They allowed eight high-danger scoring chances, which is the second-fewest they allowed all season – their 2-0 shutout win in Colorado saw them limit the Avalanche to seven high-danger opportunities.
It’s no surprise that captain Mark Giordano seemed pleased with the results of their tidy defensive zone work.
We’re committed. We’re coming in and playing low, to hard plays, and stopping in our own zone and getting available for each other. And I think as D-men we’ve actually made more plays ’cause of it, and had those little pop plays cause of it and clean breakouts. It’s helping us in the other end, too.
