The @Calgary Flames lost to the @Los Angeles Kings by a 4-3 score in overtime on Tuesday night. Here are selected reactions from coaches and players following the game.

The Flames were out-shot 20-3 in the first period in an effort that was one of their worst in forever. Flames forward @Matthew Tkachuk was pretty blunt in his assessment of the opening 20 minutes.

“The first period isn’t how we’re going to be successful this year, to say it nicely,” said Tkachuk. “We got completely out-played in the first. And then Looch steps up again, and we start to turn the tide a bit.”

What was said in the locker room following the opening period?

“We’re lucky it’s only 2-0. Let’s get working.”

The focus before the game was on Tkachuk and his feud with Kings defender Drew Doughty. Doughty had a goal and two assists on the evening, but Tkachuk was full marks. He had two goals, a primary assist and led the team in individual shot attempts, scoring chances and high-danger chances. He drew a penalty, too. Among forwards, only Backlund had more even strength ice time.

As for the feud with Doughty?

“I’m excited for round two in a couple weeks in LA.”

Mangiapane jumping in to help Tkachuk impressed his linemate, particularly in his second game playing with him.

“The thing I liked the most was I got a six-foot-six guy right on top of me and he came in and he’s half his size. That’s what I like most about his game.”

The Flames receive Edmonton’s third round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft if James Neal scores 21 (or more) goals AND out-scores Milan Lucic by 10 (or more) goals.
