In the first game of a four game set between the two clubs, the Calgary Flames rode goaltending and timely bounces to a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.
Here are some selected quotes from the post-game media addresses.

Mark Giordano

The Flames were back on their heels early, out-shot by a fair margin and hemmed in by Vancouver’s forecheck. Giordano felt that the team settled in and played a good road game, backstopped by some strong goaltending from Jacob Markstrom.
We knew we were coming in against an extremely desperate team. We knew there was going to be a heavy push there. That’s probably the most aggressive I’ve seen a team play us all year with their five man press, basically. It was standing up. I thought we played a great road game. You get your goalie to make those saves like Marky’s been doing all year early, as the game went on we made adjustments and made more and more plays and got more and more chances. But sometimes you’re going to have to win like that on the road. Especially against a team that was as desperate as they were tonight.

Geoff Ward

The Flames’ head coach agreed with his captain regarding Vancouver’s desperation. He praised his team for making adjustments and settling in, but conceded that he would’ve liked a better start from his group during his comments.
I thought we got better as the game went on. We knew they were going to come out with a real solid start. They’re at home… Whenever you get to a point where you’ve lost a few, you know when you come to that first home game you’re going to be firing. They certainly were. They got us back on our heels. Marky was outstanding, made some huge, huge stops for us. But as you alluded to, I thought we got better as the game went on. I liked our second half. So, we’ve got to make sure that we start on time, but I thought the guys made some good adjustments. I thought, really, our puck control got an awful lot better. And I thought we started supporting the puck a little bit better than we had in the first period.
