The Calgary Flames weren’t very good on Saturday and deservedly lost. They were a lot better on Monday and deservedly won, beating the Vancouver Canucks in overtime by a 4-3 score.
Here are some selected quotes from the post-game media addresses.
After scoring the overtime winning goal, Gaudreau weighed in on the team’s bounce-back from Saturday’s loss.
We’re very capable of playing a solid 60 minute game. Obviously on Saturday that wasn’t the team we know we are. Had a real good practice yesterday and I thought, you know, we played a really good, strong second and third period. Obviously they tied it up late there, we want to get better at that, the six on five or whatever, it was five on five… We found a way to win in overtime and come out of here with four out of the six points.
Most of the time this season, Andersson has played on a pairing with past Norris Trophy winner Mark Giordano (who played his 908th NHL game on Monday). Instead, he was paired with rookie Connor Mackey (who was playing in his second game). Andersson shared his thoughts on his new partner.
I thought he played really well. He’s easy to play with. He tries to make the simple play and he has poise with the puck. I was really impressed with what I saw and he has a really bright future ahead of him. I thought he played really well. Obviously he got a little unlucky with some calls, I think, but other than that I think he played really well. I was surprised by how poised he was.
With Mikael Backlund out day-to-day, Ward reunited the team’s best line from the post-season: Milan Lucic, Sam Bennett and Dillon Dube. It turned out pretty well for the team.
That line was awesome for us. Milan and Dubes and Benny. I thought they were excellent all night. They had some heavy shifts for us, two goals, really got the game turned around for us after we had to kill all the penalties. Not only did they score the goal, but they had a tremendous shift in the offensive zone leading up to it. I thought they played an integral part to getting us going tonight and putting them back together was a real good thing for our team in terms of what they brought. Exactly the same energy as in the bubble.
The Flames usually have a defenseman younger than 25 on the ice at all times – aside from penalty kill shifts where Giordano and Tanev play together. Andersson and Mackey were used as pairing consisting of two guys too young to rent a car. Ward gave his thoughts on his young blueliners.
Outside of the penalties that Connor took, I thought he was fine. Obviously he got his first NHL point. I thought Ras had an excellent hockey game. I thought he just played within himself again, he looked like he did a couple of weeks ago. I thought he was real effective. He was moving the puck, playing well away from it. It was a good thing. And you’re right, there’s an awful lot of young guys there. You’ve got to add in Noah Hanifin to the group, too. He’s played 400 games but he’s still a young guy. I thought they did a good job back there for us tonight. These are the types of games you learn from.
