The Calgary Flames’ win-one, lose-one season continues. After beating Toronto on Friday, they lost to the Maple Leafs on Saturday by a 2-0 score.
Here are some selected quotes from the post-game media addresses.

David Rittich

Rittich made 31 saves but took the loss in the game. He had a lot of positive things to say about the play of blueliner Chris Tanev, who played a team-leading 23:55 (including 13:36 overall against Auston Matthews).
He’s unbelievable. Like, with everything he does, did you see in the third period how he jumped right into the shot. When I saw it, I thought he’d [get hit] in the face. It’s not just blocks. How patient, how confident he plays in D zone, with everything he can do, it’s huge for our team and he’s one of the best defensive playing guys I’ve ever seen.

Darryl Sutter

The Flames had three power plays and had pretty radically different looks in each advantage:
  • First advantage: Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Monahan, Lindholm & Hanifin, cut short by a penalty
  • Second advantage: Andersson, Giordano, Lucic, Monahan & Mangiapane, followed by Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Hanifin, Nesterov & Bennett
  • Third advantage: Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Monahan, Lindholm & Hanifin again (for the entire PP)
Sutter noted they tried different things because they needed results.
Our first unit wasn’t very good until later in the game. We need those top guys to be a lot sharper, be a lot crisper on that number one unit.
The Flames ran with three lines (and 10 forwards) for the last two periods, with just three shifts for Josh Leivo and four for Dillon Dube. Here’s what Sutter said about his short bench.
Probably a little bit of how the game was going in terms of momentum and power plays, penalty killing, and guys being efficient and effective every shift. We had three lines, probably 10 guys, that were playing the right way, playing like we need them to play. So we just kept playing them.
