Calgary Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson will likely appear in his first game at the 4 Nations Face-Off on Monday when Team Sweden takes on Team USA at the TD Garden in Boston.
Andersson, 28, sat out of the Swedes’ first two games as a healthy scratch but appears primed to replace Edmonton Oilers defenceman Mattias Ekholm in the lineup against the Americans. Based on the lines and pairings at Monday’s morning skate, Anaheim Ducks youngster Leo Carlsson will also draw into the lineup, replacing Oilers forward Viktor Arvidsson.
Monday’s game could have huge ramifications for Team Sweden, but it all depends on how Canada and Finland fare against each other earlier in the day. If either of those teams wins in regulation, they’ll clinch a spot in the championship game against Team USA. If not, the Swedes can make it to the final with a regulation win of their own in the evening.
The stakes are much lower for the Americans, who already punched their ticket to the final with a 3-1 win over Canada on Saturday. Daily Faceoff‘s Frank Seravalli reported Monday that Team USA will rest Connor Hellebuyck, Matthew Tkachuk, and Charlie McAvoy in favour of Jake Oettinger, Chris Kreider, and Jake Sanderson, respectively.
The Flames originally selected Andersson in the second round (No. 53 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. The Malmo, Sweden product made his NHL debut with the Flames in the 2016-17 season and established himself as a regular with the team two years later.
Through 510 career games over parts of nine seasons in Calgary, Andersson has collected 44 goals and 221 points. The 6’1″ right-handed defenceman has also skated in 27 playoff games with the Flames, racking up seven goals and 14 points.
Andersson previously represented Sweden twice at the World U-18 championships in 2013 and 2014, as well as at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
