The Calgary Wranglers and San Diego Gulls had a spirited Saturday against each other with 12 goals between the two of them. The second period highlighted the majority of the action in this match-up with six goals between these teams. However, with Calgary having seven different skaters score on their end, they were able to pick up the win by the final buzzer.
The score between these two finished up at 7-5 for the Wranglers.

Lineup notes

After news of Tyson Barrie’s conditioning assignment with the Wranglers broke on Friday, it was no surprise he was in Saturday’s lineup. Also in for his first game with the Wranglers was Connor Mylymok. In the pre-game injury update, Joni Jurmo was still listed as day to day and added to that report was Dryden Hunt, who was also listed with a day to day status.
Some good news related to injuries included Devin Cooley returning to play. He did not start this game but did dress as back up. With injuries and call-ups, the leadership group also took a bit of a change for this game. Calgary had William Stromgren, Martin Frk and Jonathan Aspirot dressed as alternate captains. Their captain, Clark Bishop, remains up with the Flames and scored his first goal with the Flames on Saturday and his first NHL goal in over six years.

Game at a glance

The goaltending match up for this game was Waltteri Ignatjew for the Wranglers and Calle Clang for the Gulls. San Diego ended up getting the first good look of the game and scored at 4:56 to take an early 1-0 lead. Carson Meyer received a pass from the point and took a shot while he turned his body to the net and beat the Wranglers’ netminder.
San Diego built off this early lead and had some other looks in the opening half of the period. Calgary started to take some time in the offensive zone in the second half of the first but it was the Gulls who struck again before the end of the period. Tristan Luneau took a shot off the far post and put the visitors up 2-0 at 18:13.
That is where the score stood by the end of the first period and shots were 10-8 for San Diego in the first 20 minutes of the game. The second period was the most eventful frame of the game with six goals between these teams. It started with another marker from San Diego at 1:39 from Sam Colangelo. Colangelo picked a rebound from behind the net and scored on a wraparound.
The Wranglers started making some progress on the deficit when Yan Kuznsetov scored his third goal of the season at 5:58 off a shot from the point. Parker Bell and Jeremie Poirier picked up the assists on this first goal for the home team.
On the next shift just six seconds after the goal, Connor Mylymok and Travis Howe dropped the gloves for one heck of a tilt. Not a bad way to make your presence known in your AHL debut. Especially as a rookie in his first professional season. A few minutes later, Justin Bailey of the Gulls was called for tripping which put the Wranglers on the power play.
At 9:32, Tyson Barrie found the back of the net for his first goal since Nov. 7 and his first goal in the AHL in over a decade. He also went for the shot from the point and put it past Clang. Martin Frk and Adam Klapka assisted on this power play marker.
A couple of minutes later, the Wranglers were on the power play again with a delay of game penalty going against the Gulls. Adam Klapka scored on this power play at 12:35 off a tap in on the doorstep. Sam Morton and William Stromgren got the assists on this equalizing goal.
The home team took their first lead of the night just over four minutes later when David Silye backhanded a rebound over the shoulder of Clang. Adam Klapka and Jeremie Poirier assisted on this fourth goal of the game.
This lead only lasted seven seconds when Sasha Pastujov took the puck the other way off the face-off win and scored on Ignatjew’s short side. The 4-4 deadlock is where the score remained after 40 minutes of play and shots were 12-7 favouring the Wranglers that frame.
In the third period, the Wranglers were back on the power play when Travis Howe was called for slashing at 5:34. The already perfect power play in this game went three for three with a go-ahead marker from William Stromgren at 6:35 assisted by Martin Frk and Sam Morton. He was wide open to rip a one-timer to put his squad back in a one goal lead.
This is where the score stood for the majority of the period until some action took place in the last five minutes of regulation. The Wranglers were down a man at 16:19 when David Silye was called for hooking but Sam Morton forced a turnover and on a falling play, still used the momentum of his body to push the puck over the line. At first, the confusion was around whether or not a penalty should be called until they realized the puck ended up in the back of the net. After a lengthy review, this goal was confirmed.
In the last minute of regulation, Gulls captain Ryan Carpenter was perfectly positioned to bury a rebound that put the visitors back within a goal. Calgary protected this narrow gap in scoring and put the puck on the empty net with just three seconds to go. Martin Frk was credited with this goal as the seventh goal scorer for the home team.
This game finished with a 7-5 win and shots ended 35-27 for Calgary. Sam Morton was given the first star of the night and Adam Klapka was given the second. The third went to an opposing skater.
