The Calgary Wranglers were looking to make right by an unfortunate loss on Sunday night with their second game against the Henderson Silver Knights. Their previous game ended in an 8-3 decision and thankfully, the gap between the goals on Sunday favoured Calgary. A much better start and a more complete effort earned the Wranglers a 4-0 win and Devin Cooley’s third shutout of the season.
Lineup notes
The Wranglers switched up their 11 forward and seven defencemen system to go back to a normal 12 and six structure. Lucas Ciona returned from a brief injury to fill out the fourth line and the scratched defender was Artem Grushnikov.
Game at a glance
Devin Cooley was back to start this matinee match-up and Henderson started their other netminder, Jordan Papirny. The Wranglers have been lacking in their stars and early efforts but for this game, that was not the case. Adam Klapka got things going right away with a goal just 1:16 into the game. His line had some jump but it would be the defencemen who set him up for a tip in right in front. Yan Kuznetsov and Ilya Solovyov assisted on this opening tally.
They didn’t take their foot off the gas as they scored again at 7:22 with Sam Morton’s second goal of the season. The same blueliners set him up, Kuznetsov and Solovyov again. It was nearly the same play just a smaller stature in Morton in front of the eyes of Papirny.
MORTYYYY
Things settled in a bit more after these opening goals, and then the Wranglers were the first to activate the penalty kill. They were successful and ended up in a power play of their own in the last couple of minutes of the frame. Before the period came to an end, Walker Duehr scored goal number three of the period when he shovelled the puck in with just 16 seconds to go in the first. Sam Morton and Martin Frk assisted on this one.
WALKED RIGHT IN! Atta be Walker.
At the end of the first period, the Wranglers were up 3-0 and leading 15-12 in shots. The second period was quite a bit slower on the activity side of things. The shot count was low and only the Wranglers ended up shorthanded twice over the course of the middle frame. The second period shots were only 5-3 for Calgary and the score remained 3-0.
In the third period, the pace picked up again and both goaltenders got more action on their respective ends of the ice. Calgary found themselves on the power play in the first half of the period and Adam Klapka took this opportunity to extend the lead and score his second goal of the night. Assists on this marker came from Jakob Pelletier and Rory Kerins.
The big man makes it 4-0!!
About three quarters of the way through the period, the PIMs took a huge boost that resulted in six minutes in minor penalties and a game misconduct against Henderson and four minutes in minor penalties and a game misconduct against David Silye for continuing an altercation. What started this was Jarred Tinordi getting elbowed in the corner and everyone erupting on that play.
That pretty well wrapped up the game and by the end of the third, the Wranglers secured a 4-0 win and another shutout win for Cooley. Shots finished 30-26 for Calgary and the home team swept the three stars. Devin Cooley picked up the first star, Adam Klapka received the second and Sam Morton was recognized as the third.
This game sits a lot better for the team as they go into a new week of practice before hitting the road and only playing away games for the remainder of the month.
