The Calgary Wranglers and Ontario Reign played the back half of their Family Day weekend series on Monday for a 2:30 p.m. afternoon game. The Los Angeles Kings’ affiliate took the overtime win in the previous game and Calgary looked to get their revenge after a day break between games. The Wranglers got the lead in the first and it slowly dwindled as the game went on. They kept things even in the third and forced an overtime.
Unfortunately, the Wranglers lost in the extra frame by a 3-2 score but took a two out of possible four points on the series.
Lineup notes
The team made a pre-game announcement regarding the injury statuses. Sam Morton and Jarred Tinordi were indeed out for this game after the injuries they suffered in the first period on Friday. Joni Jurmo was also unavailable for Monday’s game due to illness.
With these new gaps in the lineup, William Stromgren and Jeremie Poirier returned for this game after missing the last game due to a development decision.

Game at a glance
The goaltending matchup for this game mirrored the lineup on Friday with Erik Portillo in net for Ontario and Devin Cooley in net for Calgary. The Wranglers carried most of the puck possession through the opening half of the period and the first penalty was whistled against the Reign at 9:28. Just under a minute into this power play, the Reign got called for another slashing call and the Wranglers had 58 seconds of a five on three to work with.
Just as the first penalty expired, the Wranglers opened the scoring off a goal from Jeremie Poirier. Rory Kerins set up for a shot down the middle of the zone and Poirier was positioned perfectly to bury his rebound. Martin Frk also picked up the secondary assist on this marker.

Shortly after this power play goal, the Wranglers took their first penalty of the game but killed it off without any scoring changes despite an increase in opportunities for the Reign. Later in the period, Martin Frk was set up in the slot and ripped a shot past Portillo to make it a 2-0 game. Hunter Brzustewicz and Rory Kerins assisted on this second marker of the period.

By the end of the period, the Wranglers remained up 2-0 and shots through the first were 10-7 for the home team. In the second period, the Wranglers didn’t let the Reign get a shot off until 6:53. They had a bad case of deja vu when Rory Kerins appeared to be in some pain and crawled off the ice and was helped off to be evaluated. He was thankfully back on the ice a few minutes later so the Wranglers didn’t have to add another player to the injured list.
A couple of minutes later, the Wranglers won a faceoff in their zone but could not corral the puck. Former Stockton Heat player, Glenn Gawdin picked up the loose puck and scored on Cooley to cut Calgary’s lead in half. Gawdin’s goal was assisted by Jeff Malott and it came at 7:55.
This tilted the momentum in the Reign’s way for the majority of the period and the penalties started to come back in the last minute of the period. Taylor Ward was called for slashing but the Wranglers only got about 50 seconds of this man advantage before Hunter Brzustewicz was called for tripping. At the end of the period, Artem Grushnikov was also called for elbowing after the buzzer sounded.
After 40 minutes of play, the Wranglers had a 2-1 lead and shots were an even 9-9 through the middle frame. The Reign were on a four on three to start the period and when it transitioned into a five on three, Martin Chromiak got a shot through traffic and evened up the score 2-2 just 1:33 into the period.
A couple of minutes later, Sam Honzek was called for cross-checking and the Wranglers penalty killers ensured this situation didn’t do any damage to the score. Calgary got one of their best chances to try and get a goal back when Jack Millar was called for tripping at 9:06. Unfortunately, the best chance on this power play was off a giveaway in the Wranglers zone that Glenn Gawdin got a shot off on.
Neither team showed much of a push to get that go ahead goal and things stayed pretty tame for the majority of the period. At 18:27, Devin Cooley tried to clear the puck out of the zone and accidentally cleared it to the stands. Martin Frk was in the box serving this untimely penalty.
They succeeded in their penalty killing efforts until the end of regulation and the score remained 2-2 at the end of 60 minutes. Calgary was doubled up in shots 12-6 in the third and had 27 more seconds to kill off to start overtime.
The penalty was killed and neither side was able to get many shots on net. Many went wide or deflected off sticks in front and didn’t make it to the net. It looked as if this game was headed to a shootout until Jeff Malott scored the game-winner for Ontario at 4:11. Cooley showed visible frustration on this goal but it called game.
The Wranglers fell 3-2 in overtime and shots finished 30-26 favouring the Reign.
Scoring stat summary
Jeremie Poirier – 1G
Rory Kerins – 2A
Martin Frk – 1G, 1A
