The Calgary Wranglers looked to snap their losing streak and play a more complete game to start their series against the Ontario Reign. While things got started on the right foot, unfortunately, both of the goals were not able to be achieved in this game. The second half of the game especially hurt this squad and by the end of it, Calgary fell 5-1.
Lineup notes
The Wranglers recalled Etienne Morin from Rapid City on Monday and he slotted into this game for his third game of the season with the Wranglers. Coming out in his place was Simon Mack. As far as the forwards went, there were a few changes with Alex Gallant and David Silye coming out and Carter King and Andrew Basha coming in.
Wranglers lines
Dryden Hunt – Rory Kerins – Martin Frk
Aydar Suniev – Sam Morton – Matvei Gridin
William Stromgren – Clark Bishop – Andrew Basha
Parker Bell – Carter King – Lucas Ciona
Artem Grushnikov – Hunter Brzustewicz
Etienne Morin – Nick Cicek
Turner Ottenbreit – Jeremie Poirier
Owen Say
Game at a glance
Owen Say got the start in this game as Ivan Prosvetov started both games in their San Jose series. Say ended up coming in for half of the first game against the Barracuda, so he was not far removed from gameplay. On the other end, Ontario opted to start Phoenix Copley for this game.
The Reign carried the first few minutes of play when Calgary was called for an early penalty against William Stromgren at 1:54. They killed this off but didn’t register their first shot until about nine and a half minutes into the period. It started with a chance from Lucas Ciona and continued with good chances from Aydar Suniev, Nick Cicek and Etienne Morin.
This momentum was paused by a holding call against Martin Frk at 12:55. Just eight seconds into this power play, the Reign appeared to score but it was Glenn Gawdin trying to bat the puck in with a high stick so it was waved down, reviewed and the call remained.
Calgary got a few more looks after they killed off the penalty but neither team was able to officially light the lamp through the first. The Wranglers managed to climb back in shots and just trailed 11-12 through 20 minutes.
For how well they played in the first game, the second started to get away from them early, Just 2:05 into the middle frame, Kenny Connors went for a wrist shot that tipped off the top of Owen Say’s glove and landed in the back of the net.
Just 2:06 later, Ontario struck again with a back door tip in from Cole Guttman putting the Wranglers down 2-0. At 5:01, Sam Morton was called for slashing and they did keep the penalty kill perfect in this game with another successful two minutes.
A few minutes later, the Wranglers got on the board with a goal from Dryden Hunt at 13:19. He jammed a puck in deep in the zone by the post in a similar fashion to his last goal on Nov. 6. Rory Kerins was credited with the primary assist and Hunter Brzustewicz picked up the secondary assist.
Before the end of the period, the Wranglers got a chance on the power play to try and even things up, but the score remained 2-1 at the end of 40 minutes. Shots in the second favoured Calgary 10-9.
The Reign were called for holding right at the end of the second period so the home team started the frame on the power play. Unfortunately, their opponents flipped it to their benefit. A turnover in the Wranglers zone turned into a rush the other way and Jared Wright scored at 1:12.
The Reign added another to their lead at 5:40 when Akil Thomas went for a shot in the slot and Taylor Ward buried his rebound. The Wranglers were on their heels by this point of the game and before they could set up something, the Reign scored their third of the period at 14:01 off a one timer from Koehn Ziemmer.
Calgary had one more push to try and get a little closer in this game at 16:07, when Martin Chromiak was called for slashing but nothing else made it past Copley. They felt too far out of it to bother pulling Say and once the final buzzer sounded, the Wranglers fell 5-1. Shots finished 29-27 favouring Calgary.
Scoring stat summary
Dryden Hunt – 1G
Rory Kerins – 1A
Hunter Brzustewicz – 1A
