The Calgary Wranglers and Manitoba Moose kicked off their weekend series with an afternoon game on Saturday. The Moose came into this game 2-3 in their last five games and the Wranglers came in 1-4 in their last five. It was a high scoring game that put 12 Calgary skaters on the scoresheet but unfortunately, they just fell short with a 6-5 final score.

The Wranglers got a few players back prior to the NHL trade deadline. Most of them ended up playing in this game as well. Adam Klapka and Ilya Solovyov were assigned to the Wranglers after their stints with the Flames. Also coming in for this game from the Rapid City Rush was Connor Mylymok.

Game at a glance
The starting goaltenders consisted of Devin Cooley for Calgary and Domenic DiVincentiis for Manitoba. On the first shift of the game, William Stromgren was sporting a bubble and ended up setting up Adam Klapka for a grade-a opportunity on the doorstep just 10 seconds in. This puck was kept out and play continued.
The opening few minutes continued to bring some highly entertaining action when Alex Gallant and Tyrel Bauer dropped the gloves off the faceoff just 2:10 into the game. This looked to be Gallant’s fight of the year and they exchanged punches for quite some time. They took their five minutes in the box before going to their respective locker rooms for some repairs to their faces.
The Moose were the first to make it on the board on just their second shot of the afternoon. Ilya Solovyov got tied up in the corner behind the Wranglers’ net and when the puck was coughed up, Dominic Toninato was in the perfect spot to rip it past Devin Cooley. Toninato’s goal came at 4:47.
The Wranglers got a couple of chances on the power play after this goal and managed to even up the score at 15:19 when Sam Morton crashed Manitoba’s zone pretty well undefended and put a shot on net from a distance was slightly redirected by a Moose players stick and scored top corner. Hunter Brzustewicz and Jeremie Poirier assisted on this power play goal.
From end to end 😮💨
Before this opening period came to an end, Connor Mylymok and Tyson Empey planned a tilt at centre ice and both placed their helmets down. This fight attempt at 19:21 was short lived as they fell to the ice pretty early into it. They were both dealt fighting majors and unsportsmanlike conduct minors for removing their helmets.
At the end of the opening 20 minutes, the Moose and Wranglers were tied 1-1 and Calgary out-shot Manitoba 13-11. In the second period, the Moose found the back of the net next with a goal from Fabian Wagner at 5:12. Wagner chipped in a puck passed up to him from behind the net and gave the home team the lead once again.
The Wranglers didn’t wait too long to follow this goal and Adam Klapka was the next to score at 8:18. He was right in front of the net and once a shot attempt ended up right in front of him, he jumped on it to do a half spin and shoot it past the Moose netminder. This goal was assisted by Tyson Barrie and Ilya Solovyov.

The Moose got a few shots on the board after this goal then at 13:27, Mason Shaw and Jeremie Poirier were called for offsetting penalties for hooking and tripping. Shortly after this four on four wrapped up, the Moose scored again to break the tie. Danny Zhilkin snuck a backhander past Cooley at 16:29.
The Wranglers took a penalty before the end of the period that ended up carrying into the third. After two complete periods, the Moose had a 3-2 lead and shots in the middle frame were 11-6 Manitoba.
In the third, the Wranglers did some quick work to earn their first lead of the game. It started with Jonathan Aspirot scoring at 2:43. He took the shot from the point and a Moose skater in front accidentally deflected it in. Lucas Ciona and Jeremie Poirier assisted on this marker.
Just under two minutes later, the Wranglers struck again with a goal from Dryden Hunt. Rory Kerins forced a turnover and Hunt took an off-balanced shot that beat DiVincentiis. The Moose has a similar run of goals that turned the tables starting with a goal from Mason Shaw at 6:39 he scored off a rebound then a goal from Isaak Phillips at 7:40 off a slap shot.
These teams took a few minutes after these goals to get some shots back on the board and it was the Wranglers who struck next at 15:41 to even things up. Yan Kuznetsov scored off a set up from William Stromgren.
Just 19 seconds after this Wranglers goal, Brad Lambert appeared to score but it was waved off by the officials. They ended up scoring their game winner at 17:01 with a shot Mason Shaw picked Devin Cooley’s blocker side and beat him cleanly.
The Wranglers pulled Cooley for the extra attacker at 18:24 but could not find another marker by the end of regulation. Calgary narrowly fell in this game with a final score of 6-5. Shots finished 36-32 favouring Manitoba.
