The Calgary Wranglers and Manitoba Moose kicked off their throwback series on Friday where the Wranglers rocked Saint John Flames jerseys for the 25 year anniversary of the former Flames affiliate’s Calder Cup victory. These uniforms had a special energy to them as Calgary put up six goals in the second period and took this game by the reins. The Wranglers finished up with a demanding 7-2 win.
Lineup notes
The team made an injury update prior to the game. Rory Kerins is still listed as week-to-week (which was to be expected) and Lucas Ciona was added back to the list with a lower body injury. Ciona is out day-to-day. Martin Frk returned back to the lineup for this game after missing Calgary’s series last weekend. Some other changes include Turner Ottenbreit and Parker Bell coming out of the lineup and Simon Mack, David Silye and Carter Wilkie coming in.

Arsenii Sergeev
Game at a glance
The Wranglers started Arsenii Sergeev in net and on the other end of the ice, Domenic DiVincetiis got the nod. Alex Gallant joined Clark Bishop and Aydar Suniev in the starting lineup, which was curious as they were out of order on the line combinations, but just 14 seconds into the game, he dropped the gloves against Tyrel Bauer.
They set the tone, took their respective fighting majors and this game got going. At 5:13, the Wranglers took a penalty when Dryden Hunt was called for tripping and he gave Gallant a pat on the head for his tilt. Shortly after Hunt took this penalty, Gallant and Bauer skated back to the benches as their penalties were served and were met by stick taps from both sides of the ice.
When Gallant was asked if this fight was premeditated, he said:
“It was one of those things. I always think about it when you know there’s a guy like Bauer on the other side. We’ve had some history, we’ve went before and once this started, and he was on the other side, I figured it was a good time for it to get the guys going.”
With just five seconds remaining in Hunt’s minor penalty, Brayden Yager went bar down on Sergeev’s blocker side and put the Moose up 1-0 with the power play marker. Former Flame and Wrangler Walker Duehr picked up the secondary assist on this goal.
At 8:27, the Wranglers got their first power play of the game when the Moose were called for hooking. They had a few looks on this man advantage but couldn’t find that answer back goal. Later in the period, Nick Cicek was taken down by a high stick and the Moose were sent to the box.
The rest of the period was pretty back and forth and by the end of 20 minutes, the Moose led the Wranglers 1-0. Shots through the opening frame were 13 a side. The Wranglers got going early in the second with a goal from Justin Kirkland 1:03 into the frame. He got a piece of a rebound and drove it into the back of the net. Dryden Hunt and Martin Frk picked up the assists.
About three and a half minutes later, Aydar Suniev split the defenceman and came up on the rush to beat Domenic DiVincentiis top shelf. Etienne Morin and Gavin White picked up the assists on this marker. This goal came at 4:41.

41 seconds after this goal, Suniev scored again with a bank shot off the Moose netminder. Clark Bishop and William Stromgren picked up the helpers on this goal.
About three minutes after Suniev’s second goal of the game, Sam Morton made it a 4-1 game with a post and in shot. Brennan Othmann and Daniil Miromanov assisted on Morton’s goal at 8:07.
What a shot from Sam Morton to put the Wranglers up by three
Quite a bit later in the period, Brennan Othmann went for a breakaway chance and ran out of room. This shot was at 17:25, then at 17:32, he was tripped up and the Wranglers got a power play. At 19:04, Justin Kirkland scored his second of the period off a redirect from Dryden Hunt’s shot. Martin Frk also assisted on this marker.

That wasn’t the end of it either. At 19:47, Clark Bishop came up on the rush with Carter King. King passed it to Bishop and Bishop positioned himself like he was going to pass it back and shot it past DiVincentiis.
Why not six? Clark Bishop scores late in the second period to put Calgary up 6-1
At the end of this explosive period, the Wranglers had a 6-1 lead and shots in the middle frame were 15-12 for Manitoba. The Moose kept their same netminder for the third period and just 13 seconds in, Carter King was called for high-sticking. Calgary killed this penalty without any damage done.
At 7:04, Walker Duehr put up his second point of the night with a deflection goal. He was screening the net and got the last touch. This made it a 6-2 game. Around the midway mark of the period, the Moose were called for slashing and William Stromgren was called for unsportsmanlike conduct.
After this four-on-four concluded, Artem Grushnikov scored his first goal of the year with a shot from the offensive zone faceoff dot. William Stromgren and Alex Gallant picked up the assists on this goal at 13:35.

There wasn’t much left for the Moose to come back from at this point in the game and they ran the time out with no further scoring. Shots in the third finished 16-7 for the Moose and 44-32 for Manitoba overall. The Wranglers won 7-2 and the three stars went to Clark Bishop for the third star, Justin Kirkland for the second and Aydar Suniev for the first.
Justin Kirkland spoke to the media after this big win and said:
“It was a good bounce back effort. We weren’t too happy with our last result in Coachella. It was not to our standard so we knew we needed to be a lot better tonight and I thought we did that.”
