The Calgary Wranglers kicked off their second road trip of the season in San Jose on Saturday night. Their previous road trip went very well for them with a perfect 4-0 record. The only three losses they have been dealt this season have all been at home. This streak was not broken in this game as the Wranglers picked up a 6-2 win against the Barracuda on game one of their weekend series.
Lineup notes
Dryden Hunt was back for this game after missing the last series against the Henderson Silver Knights on a call-up with the Flames. Adam Klapka was also up with the Flames but did not miss any Wranglers games with the way their schedule lined up. He played in last weekend’s games and was in the lineup for this game against the San Jose Sharks affiliate.
Artem Grushnikov was out of the lineup last game when the coaching staff reduced the blueliners from seven to six. He was back for this game, and they went back to seven defenders. With Hunt and Grushnikov getting back in, Martin Frk and Parker Bell were out of this game as they were back down to 11 forwards.
Game at a glance
Devin Cooley was in net for this game for his first meeting with his old organization. He did not end up playing with the San Jose Barracuda last year but did play in six games with the Sharks last season. On the Barracuda’s side, Yaroslav Askarov got the start. These two were previously the goaltending tandem for the Milwaukee Admirals in the 2022-23 season.
Devin Cooley got tested early with a shot from Danil Gushchin that ended up in the back of the net. Gushchin went forehand backhand on a partial breakaway and beat Cooley on the second shot of the game. This goal came at 1:30 and was assisted by Collin Graf and Andrew Poturalski.
The Wranglers took a few minutes to bounce back but found some momentum on the first power play at the game just over seven minutes in. They wouldn’t register any shots until after this power play was over but did manage to get on the board to equalize this game before the end of the period.
Jonathan Aspirot scored off a one-timer Walker Duehr set him up for at 16:32. William Stromgren also picked up an assist on this marker.
About a minute and a half later, the Wranglers found themselves on another power play when Lucas Vanroboys was called for roughing. Walker Duehr capitalized on this chance with a power play goal a minute later he ripped past Askarov’s glove side. Dryden Hunt and Sam Morton assisted on this one at 18:59.
Beauty placement!
By the end of the first period, the Wranglers were up 2-1 and trailing slightly in shots 10-8. They continued their push into the second period with an early goal of their own from Rory Kerins. Their first shot of the period ended up lighting the lamp at 1:49. Dryden Hunt looked like he was going for a wraparound attempt but Kerins was right there on the doorstep to elevate the puck over the shoulder of the netminder.
Rory Kerins 👏 Rory Kerins 👏
Calgary continued the pressure with another goal a few minutes later. Sam Morton scored backdoor at 5:54 off a pass from William Stromgren. Ilya Solovyov also assisted on goal number four of the evening.
Absolute feed 🍽️
The rest of the period played out without a hitch and with a bit more effort on San Jose’s side of the ice but no change in scoring. By the end of 40 minutes, the Wranglers were up 4-1 and still were narrowly outshot that frame 10-9.
Most of the third was played to protect the lead. The Barracuda had a bit of a push approaching the midway mark of the period but could not cut the Wranglers’ lead at this time. Instead, they waited until late in the period.
They pulled Askarov at 16:06 and got rewarded for this choice. At 17:39 Danil Gushchin scored his second goal of the game and the season and split the Wranglers’ lead in half. He received a pass that cut through the front of the crease and scored on a well-placed wrist shot.
Askarov went back out briefly then went back to the bench so his team could try and push for another goal in the dying minutes. Adam Klapka took away some of their hope with an empty net goal at 18:28, then David Silye scored an empty-netter of his own at 19:10. This goal was his first AHL goal and put Calgary ahead by four.
FIRST AHL GOAL FOR THE KID!! 6-2!
Yaroslav Askarov finished the game in net after this goal and when the final buzzer sounded, the Wranglers secured a 6-2 win. Walker Duehr was given the first star and Sam Morton was given the third star. Shots finished 33-27 for San Jose and Cooley stopped 31 opposing shots.
