The Calgary Wranglers made their first visit to Abbotsford on Tuesday to face the defending Calder Cup Champions, the Abbotsford Canucks. The odds were in Calgary’s favour as the Canucks were missing five of their regulars to NHL call-ups.
Nonetheless, they managed to keep this a goaltending battle until the third period, when Calgary scored three and picked up a 3-0 win.
Lineup notes
The Wranglers made just the one move since their last game which included the ECHL assignment of Simon Mack. Mack played in three games with the Wranglers so far and did not slot into either game against the Coachella Valley Firebirds last weekend.
As far as scratches went, Jeremie Poirier and Artem Grushnikov came out on the blue line and David Silye and Andrew Basha came out up front. Filling in their spots were Etienne Morin, Turner Ottenbreit, Lucas Ciona and Alex Gallant.
Wranglers lines

Game at a glance
Ivan Prosvetov got the start for Calgary after picking up the win between the pipes against the Coachella Valley Firebirds in their last game on Saturday. On Abbotsford’s end, Ty Young was between the pipes. Prosvetov was getting some of the first looks, then Young got involved about five minutes in. Matvei Gridin was out all alone just over eight minutes into the period and was denied by Young on the breakaway.
At 12:18, a quick sequence of events resulted in a large list of penalties. It started when Canucks captain Chase Wouters put up an awkward hit on Sam Morton along the boards that was borderline dangerous with Morton half bent down and not expecting Wouters’ impact. No call was made so Alex Gallant came to Morton’s defence and took matters into his own hands. Wouters did not fight back and Alex Gallant was called for fighting, instigating and two 10 minute misconducts for an aggressor call and unsportsmanlike conduct. Wouters did end up with a boarding call and Martin Frk was in the box serving Gallant’s fighting major. Gallant was done for the night after this.
Sam Morton, Aydar Suniev and Matvei Gridin started picking up extra shifts as they were down a forward for the rest of the game. This period didn’t finish without more fighting, surprisingly. With 1:05 remaining in the period, Turner Ottenbreit and Joe Arntsen went toe to toe at center ice and both got tagged for five minute majors. At the end of the first, the game was scoreless and Abbotsford had a 12-8 edge in shots. Ivan Prosvetov stood on his head to keep this a scoreless game through 20 minutes.
The Wranglers spent most of the first half of the second period penalty killing but were still able to get some shots on goal. Around the midway mark, there were three overlapping penalties that resulted in about a 30-second power play for Calgary. They weren’t able to generate much but had another chance at 14:13 and 18:44. A period played with very limited full strength shifts kept the game scoreless and shots close. Abbotsford has the slight edge in shots in the middle frame, putting up nine to Calgary’s eight.
The first goal finally came eight minutes into the third when Yan Kuznetsov caught up to the rush and picked up a pass from Martin Frk, put the puck on net and it rolled over the goal line. Rory Kerins also picked up an assist on this opening goal.
Shortly after, Calgary had an extended look with the man advantage when Ivan Prosvetov went off and they got 32 seconds of delayed penalty time. On this power play, Aydar Suniev scored his first professional goal and first as a Wrangler off a smooth wrist shot at 11:48.
First pro goal for Aydar Suniev 🔥
William Stromgren and Hunter Brzustewicz assisted on this second goal of the night. Less than two minutes later, Calgary pulled ahead by another goal with a marker from Rory Kerins, who was waiting on the doorstep. Lucas Ciona and Sam Morton assisted on this one at 13:30.
what's better than 2-0? 3-0 baby!! 🚨
The Canucks attempted a late push for some hope in this game, but they had no success. The defence and the Wranglers netminder ensured this game would stay without a goal on the board for the home team and Ivan Prosvetov picked up his first shutout as a Wrangler. All three stars went to Wranglers with Yan Kuznetsov getting the third, Rory Kerins getting the second and Ivan Prosvetov getting the first.
Scoring stat summary
