The Calgary Wranglers played their third game of the week on Saturday in a road match-up against the Bakersfield Condors. It was a Star Wars themed night for the Edmonton Oilers affiliate, and this game was the last meeting between these two this season. The Condors had the first and only goal early in the second period and despite seven chances on the power play, the Wranglers could not answer back. They were shutout in a 1-0 decision.

Game at a glance

The goaltending match-up for this game consisted of Arsenii Sergeev for the Wranglers and Calvin Pickard for the Condors. This game started with an early offsetting penalty against Quinn Hutson for roughing and Dryden Hunt for holding the stick just 1:27 into this game. 27 seconds into this four on four, Sam Morton was called for an illegal check to the head and Calgary was penalty killing on the four on three.
The Condors put up the first shots of the game and a 9:05, the home team was called for a high sticking double minor. The Wranglers ended up getting a full five on three 1:10 later, when Bakersfield was called for delay of game as well. Calgary registered four shots on this opportunity but weren’t able to capitalize.
Once things got back to even strength, these two teams exchanged chances then at the end of the period, it was still a scoreless game. Calgary outshot Bakersfield 9-6 through the opening frame. There was a bit of a scrum to start the second period and this resulted in coincidental roughing calls against Turner Ottenbreit and Connor Clattenburg. On this four on four, the Condors scored first with a pass up from the point that Atro Leppannen settled and shot past Sergeev. This goal came at 1:28.
Around the six minute mark, Parker Bell had the best chance for Calgary to answer back with a shot that rang off the post. He caught Pickard a bit out of position and had quite a bit of space to work with. The Wranglers had another chance to try and even things up at 12:50, when the Condors were called for cross-checking. Calgary didn’t score on this chance but got another power play chance before the end of the period when Quinn Hutson was called for slashing at 17:56.
Despite these chances, Calgary was only able to put up three shots in the middle frame and was trailing 1-0 at the end of 40 minutes. Bakersfield had 10 shots in the second. This game kept things tight into the third period and Calgary was getting the early chances to try and get on the board and even the scoring. Around the seven minute mark, the Wranglers had a giveaway and the initial shot beat Sergeev off the crossbar, but he was able to make a sprawling save to keep the game within one.
At 12:32, Turner Ottenbreit was slashed and the Wranglers got their fifth chance on the power play to try and get one on the board. Before this power play started, Calgary took their timeout. Their power play was cut short by a call against Dryden Hunt for high-sticking. There was a four on four for 1:13 then the Condors were on a modified power play for 47 seconds.
Calgary was lucky enough to get another power play chance before the end of regulation with a tripping call going against Bakersfield at 16:28. They weren’t able to register a goal on this seventh power play chance of the game and pulled Sergeev for the extra attacker at 18:40. The Wranglers registered three more shots before the end of the game and fell 1-0. Shots finished 22-20 for Calgary.
