Recap: Wranglers sweep Eagles in season closing series

The Calgary Wranglers played their final game of the season on Saturday night against the Colorado Eagles. They had a commanding 5-2 win on Friday and looked to continue this high into the back to back. The Eagles got going early with three goals in the first period, two of which were on the power play. The Wranglers dialed things up in the second period, putting up four goals and getting within one goal of the Eagles. Calgary scored another three in the third period and won their season closer 7-5 and swept the weekend series.
Lineup notes
Rory Kerins was back in the lineup after being swapped out on Friday at the last minute. Also coming back into the lineup was Carter Wilkie, Turner Ottenbreit and Arsenii Sergeev. Sergeev did not back up on Friday due to the quick turnaround and travel, and Connor Murphy picked up the win for Calgary. Coming out of the lineup for this game were Alex Gallant, Carter King and Xavier Bernard.

Game at a glance
Arsenii Sergeev got his last possible start of the season fresh off his first NHL game and first NHL win on Thursday. At the other end of the ice, Isak Posch got the nod between the pipes. The Eagles rested quite a few players for this game as they are playoff bound next week. Calgary had another early chance in this game after scoring in the opening 36 seconds of the game prior.
Instead, it was the Eagles who got on the board first in this game. At 4:21, Martin Frk was called for cross-checking and Colorado’s power play that went zero for eight on Friday, scored eight seconds into this first power play of the game at 4:29. Gavin Brindley was the goal scorer for the home team with a quick shot off Calgary’s clearing attempt. Just under a minute after this opening goal, the Eagles scored again off a back door rebound Luke Toporowski buried. A couple of minutes later, the Wranglers were penalty killing again as they were called for too many men. Martin Frk served this call as well.
The penalty killing continued for the Wranglers at 12:04 when Clark Bishop was called for hooking. Shortly after, Sam Morton was called for cross-checking at 12:16. By 12:35, the Eagles put their third puck in the back of the net. Jacob MacDonald scored on a far side shot from the top of the face-off circle.
Calgary managed to stay out of the box for the rest of the period but finished the first down 3-0 and were out-shot 15-7 in the opening frame. The Wranglers answered back with their first goal of the game from Brennan Othmann at 1:51. David Silye did a good job protecting the puck in the zone then ultimately ended up setting up Othmann for his one timer. Dryden Hunt picked up the secondary assist.
Calgary got another goal just over a minute and a half later at 3:35, when Daniil Miromanov snuck a shot past Posch. Dryden Hunt and Clark Bishop picked up the assists on this marker.

At 5:21, the Wranglers got their first shot on the power play when Jake Wise was called for tripping. Shortly after this power play expired, they got another when Alex Gagne was called for holding. After this penalty expired, the Wranglers went up the ice with a clean passing sequence that Nick Cicek finished off with a goal. Rory Kerins and Dryden Hunt assisted on this goal at 10:42.

At 13:03 a string of penalties started with a call against Turner Ottenbreit for high sticking then a a holding call against Matt DiMarsico at 13:18. At 13:39, Ronnie Attard scored Colorado’s fifth goal of the night then another call went against the Eagles for slashing at 14:10. Just as this penalty expired, Clark Bishop scored for his third point of the game and put Calgary back within one. Sam Morton and Nick Cicek picked up the assists at 16:13.

After this goal, the scrum in front of the net ended in a four on four as William Stromgren and Chase Bradley were called for roughing. While they were still in the box, Gavin White was called for tripping at 17:54. The Wranglers killed this off and by the end of the period, it was a 5-4 Eagles game. Shots in the middle frame were 16-12 for Colorado.
Both sides were keeping the intensity into the third period and Calgary scored their first equalizing goal of the night from Parker Bell at 5:04. Carter Wilkie picked up the assist.

At 6:34, the Eagles were called for hooking and the Wranglers took their first lead of the game with a power play goal from Martin Frk at 7:54. Dryden Hunt and Rory Kerins assisted on this one as well and Frk went for one shot then scored off his own rebound.

A few minutes later, the Wranglers needed to be sharp on the penalty kill when Turner Ottenbreit was called for holding at 10:15. They killed this off and kept their lead. The Eagles pushed hard to try and even up the scoring again. At 17:50, they pulled Isak Posch for the extra attacker and took a timeout with 2:02 to go in regulation.
The Eagles had a high danger chance that Sergeev stopped then Daniil Miromanov cleared on the rebound. Then at 19:08, Martin Frk scored his 30th goal of the season on the empty net. Posch came back in net for the rest of the game and at the last buzzer, the Wranglers picked up a 7-5 win. Shots finished 49-28 for Colorado.
