The Calgary Wranglers returned home for the weekend after picking up the sweep in Abbotsford earlier in the week. They hosted the Bakersfield Condors for the first of two this weekend for a themed Indigenous Celebration game. Four of Calgary’s last eight games needed to be decided in either overtime or a shootout and this game made it their fifth game decided outside of regulation this season.
Lineup notes
Alex Gallant served the second of his three game suspension this game, so he did not draw into the lineup. David Silye and Turner Ottenbreit also came out. Calgary went back to a traditional 12 forwards and eight defencemen for this game after going 11 and seven on Wednesday. Lucas Ciona and Carter King came back into the lineup for this game on the fourth line.

Game at a glance
Calgary had two days since their last game, so that gave Ivan Prosvetov a couple of days recovery before he was back between the pipes for this game for his fourth straight start. For the Condors, they opted to go with Matt Tomkins in net. The netminders weren’t tested too much for the majority of the first period and there wasn’t any scoring or penalties until later in the frame.
At 18:12, Martin Frk opened up the scoring when Sam Morton dished a pass on the doorstep that Martin Frk elevated over Tomkins. Matvei Gridin also assisted on this opening tally.
15 seconds later, Calgary struck again when William Stromgren got a pass up to Rory Kerins from an awkward angle and Kerins ripped a shot from the slot to quickly make it a 2-0 game.
absolute magic 🪄
17 seconds after this second Wranglers goal, the first penalty of the game was called against Nick Cicek for tripping. This penalty carried into the second period and Calgary held the 2-0 lead at the end of 20 minutes. Shots through the first were 8-7 Calgary.
The second period was a pretty even effort for the first half, then at 10:17, Clark Bishop and Rem Pitlick took offsetting penalties. Bishop for holding the stick, and Pitlick for interference. About a minute and a half into this four on four, the Condors scored their first of the game when Cam Dineen did a toe drag move and scored off the crossbar at 11:45.
This drove more momentum for the visitors and they controlled much of the second half of the period. At 18:44, Parker Bell took an interference call and in the dying seconds of the period, Bakersfield scored again. Ivan Prosvetov was manning the crease without a stick and Pitlick picked a spot around the Wranglers netminder with three seconds to go in the period. By the end of 40 minutes, the game was tied 2-2 and Bakersfield dominated the shots 17-6 in the frame.
The Wranglers had a good first shift in the third to try and get back ahead of the Oilers affiliate, then at 7:03, they were successful in that effort. Carter King picked up his first goal of the season when Dryden Hunt put up a pass from behind the net and King managed to score from his knees. William Stromgren also assisted on this goal for his second point of the night.
Calgary's own, Carter King, notching his first goal of the season 🔥
The Wranglers got a power play opportunity shortly after and managed to put up a couple of shots but nothing to change the score. The next penalty calls were a battle of the Captains, as Clark Bishop and Seth Griffith got caught behind the net and Bishop fell to the ice. This turned into some pushing and shoving that tagged these two with offsetting roughing calls.
Calgary held on to their lead and were getting down to the final minutes but with just over three minutes to go in regulation, the Condors evened things up again with a backdoor tap in from Connor Clattenburg.
The best chance to take the lead back and win this game came on a breakaway from Rory Kerins. He was denied and this game went to overtime. The Condors had the first couple of shots but the one shot Calgary got was the one that counted. Sam Morton entered the zone alone, tried a shot, then Matvei Gridin got to the puck adjacent to the goal line and set up Morton to finish the play and the game.
MORTY MORTY MORTY 👏 He knew what to do!
Prosvetov picked up his fourth win in a row and the Wranglers’ final score was 4-3. Shots finished 38-28 for the Condors and two of the three stars went to Calgary. Carter King picked up the second and Sam Morton earned the first.
