The Calgary Flames will be looking to record consecutive wins for the first time this season when they welcome the Detroit Red Wings to town on Thursday night as -235 betting favourites on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com
Calgary is coming off a 3-1 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers as -145 chalk on Tuesday but has struggled to find consistency while compiling the 3-3-1 record it takes into Thursday night’s game at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Red Wings at Flames | OddsShark Matchup Report
While the Flames dominated in Tuesday’s win, firing 37 shots at former Calgary netminder Brian Elliott, they have yet to score with consistency in the early going, averaging just 2.57 goals per game through their first seven contests. However, any success on home ice is welcome after the team fell to defeat in three of their previous nine dates at the Saddledome.
Tuesday’s contest also marked the Flames’ second straight low-scoring affair. Five or fewer total goals have been scored in four of Calgary’s past six outings, spawning a 4-2 run for the UNDER in totals betting. The total has also finished UNDER with regularity when the Flames play at home, going 9-2-2 in 13 contests since March 15, according to the OddsShark NHL Database.
However, recent clashes between the Flames and Detroit have tended to be high-scoring matchups. The two teams have combined to average 9.25 goals per game over their past four meetings, extending a steady run for the OVER, which has gone 6-1-2 in nine clashes between these clubs since Mach 2015 at betting sites.
The high-scoring trend has proved to be a benefit to the Flames, who have come away with the win in seven of those nine contests. That includes four straight home victories, capped by a 6-4 win as -250 chalk back on January 18.
That’s bad news for the Red Wings, who arrive in Calgary for Thursday’s matchup pegged as underdogs after suffering a decisive 5-1 loss in Vancouver as a +125 bet on Tuesday night.
The Red Wings have now surrendered 10 total goals during a two-game losing streak, and have also struggled badly on offense, potting two or fewer goals in three of their past four contests. However, Detroit’s ability to fill the net on the road cannot be underestimated after scoring four or more goals in three of their past five away contests.
