Before he was a member of the Calgary Flames, blueliner Chris Tanev plied his trade with the Vancouver Canucks. And this probably won’t shock you, friends, but reports from out west are that if the Flames are looking to move Tanev, the Canucks are an interested party.
On Wednesday’s edition of Donnie and Dhali: The Team on CHEK, Rick Dhaliwal mentioned what the Flames would be looking for in a Tanev trade: prospects that can step in.
Here’s Dhaliwal:
“The Canucks keep pushing Garland and Beauvillier on the Flames, but that’s not gonna cut it. Not even a second-rounder’s gonna cut it right now. The Flames want a top prospect. The Flames are looking for a young prospect that can play in their lineup right now.”
Dhaliwal pointed to the Flames’ acquisition of Yegor Sharnagovich from New Jersey in the Tyler Toffoli trade as the type of move he could see the Flames making, in terms of getting younger players that can insert right into their lineup.
He also expressed doubt to co-host Don Taylor that the Canucks are a front-runner for Tanev.
“I’ve been told, Donnie, the preference is to send Tanev back east. It’s going to be hard to get him. They just don’t want him on the west coast, they don’t want him in the same division, they don’t want him in Vancouver unless the Canucks make some sort of a stupid offer.”
Tanev, 33, is in the final year of a four-year deal that carries a $4.5 million cap hit and a modified no-trade clause. Per Cap Friendly, Tanev’s deal has a 10-team no-trade list. (Dhaliwal reported that Tanev turned down a contract offer from the Flames and that his no-trade list doesn’t have Vancouver on it.)
The Flames are back in action on Thursday against the Vancouver Canucks.
