As the Calgary Flames hit the ice in preparation for a preseason game Monday, a sad report from CTV News’ Ian White. Per White, Flames co-owner Clay Riddell has reportedly passed away.
Riddell joined the Flames ownership group in 2003. A longtime energy sector executive and a geologist by trade, he was a giant in Calgary’s oil industry – he’s arguably best known as the founder, president and CEO of Paramount Resources – and involved in a number of charitable endeavours. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of his volunteer and philanthropic work in 2008.
Update: the Flames have confirmed Mr. Riddell’s passing.

Incredibly sad. Clay was a titan of our community—in industry, philanthropy, sport, and education. Calgarians feel his legacy now, and we will feel it for many years to come. My heart goes out his family and friends in this difficult time. Know that we all mourn with you today.
