While the Calgary Flames have been dealing with their own COVID-19 outbreak, the province as a whole has been dealing with the influx of the omicron variant of the virus. In a media briefing on Tuesday afternoon, the Government of Alberta announced a series of new restrictions.
Among them, a cap on venues with over 1,000 seats – such as the Scotiabank Saddledome – capping attendance of 50% of total capacity for the foreseeable future.
Here’s the update to the restrictions:
Indoor entertainment, event and recreation facilities (Effective Dec 24 at 12:01am)
Indoor facilities that participate in the Restrictions Exemption Program:
Must limit capacity to:
-50% if venue seats more than 1,000 people.
-500 people if venue seats between 500 and 1,000 people.
No food and drink consumption in seated audience settings or during intermissions in the above mentioned venues.
This would cap Saddledome capacity at 9,644 of the total 19,289 capacity and severely restrict, if not entirely eliminate, food and beverage consumption at the games. Per ESPN, the Flames have averaged 15,456 fans in their home games so far this season. (They have yet to sell out a game.)
We’ve reached out to the Flames to get clarification as to how these restrictions will impact the game experience and will update this article when we receive additional information.
