We’re just days away from the 2022 National Hockey League trade deadline and the Calgary Flames have made a couple of big moves in adding Tyler Toffoli and Calle Jarnkrok. On Friday’s edition of the DFO Rundown, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli provided some updates on the Flames and their activities between now and Monday’s deadline.
Seravalli framed the remaining Flames adds fairly succinctly:  “I think they get a depth defenseman, and I think they just get the best one they can find before Monday at 3 p.m. at the least cost.”
Responding to a comment from co-host Jason Gregor on the prior two big moves, Seravalli had a lot of positive things to say about the Flames’ activities so far:

I actually love both these trades. And it’s not recency bias based on Toffoli and the success that he’s found in Calgary. I feel like that these were two trades that were well thought-out and curated. I think that’s the best word. The fits and the comfort level with all these guys. Between everyone knowing Toffoli, Sutter, he played for him, played with Milan Lucic, played with Sean Monahan. And then you bring in Jarnkrok, who’s cousins with Lindholm and grew up int he same town as Markstrom – Gälve, Sweden. I just love the versatility that he provides. Brad Treliving called him a three-position forward. He can play any spot on really any line. He can kill penalties. He’s diligent, he works, he grinds. And then Toffoli gives you the scoring punch. I really really like Calgary’s team, and I would not be surprised at all to see them go on a deep run.
Seravalli also doubled-down on his confidence that the Flames could move on from Sean Monahan, who was recently added to his trade board. If it happens before the trade deadline, it’ll be to add another player rather than just a salary dump.

At this point what they’re doing is getting out from under his contract. If it’s just to dump the money… If it’s to get someone else now to help them, i could see them doing it. But if it’s just to unload the contract, they’re just going to wait to the summer to do that and someone will take him off their hands…
He went on to reiterate that since Monahan used to be a consistent 30 goal, 30 assist player, there will be teams confident they can return him to that form.
The trade deadline is at 1 p.m. MT (3 p.m. ET) on Monday afternoon.
