After a strong start to the season, could the Calgary Flames be looking to add to their hockey club? That could be the case according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.
Seravalli appeared on Amazon’s NHL Coast to Coast on Thursday evening and chatted with host Andi Petrillo about the possibility of the Flames adding to their roster. According to Seravalli, they’re in the market for a middle six centre.
Early season trades are rare, but the #Flames – one of the best stories to start the year – are looking to add another center to the mix.

Here’s what Seravalli had to say:
Andi Petrillo: Let’s talk about a Canadian team that’s off to a great start. That would be the Calgary Flames. 4-0. So do you see them adding any pieces as the season goes on?Frank Seravalli: Yeah Andi, what a great story the Flames have been to start this first week and a half. And a lot of people were expecting at some point this year, with all the names that have been out the door last year, hey, they might be moving on from guys. No, it’s actually quite the opposite. There’s not usually much trade activity to start a season, but I’m told Flames GM Craig Conroy has been working the phones in recent days to try and find a centre to add to the Calgary Flames in their middle six. Preferably someone that fits their age scheme. Preferably, if at all possible in a perfect world, a right shooting centre at that.So keep an eye on the Calgary Flames. They don’t have any interest in tearing things down, they’d actually like to beef up and bolster their lineup if at all possible. But it’s tough at the beginning of the season, Andi.
Right now, the Flames have two established NHL centres on their roster: 34-year-old Nazem Kadri and 35-year-old Mikael Backlund. And behind them, they’ve been trying out 24-year-old Martin Pospisil at centre, but he hasn’t been great at the face-off dot (at 42.9%). And behind Pospisil, there are some decent stop-gap options – 28-year-old Justin Kirkland, 31-year-old Kevin Rooney and 25-year-old college signing Sam Morton.
But the Flames don’t have a promising young centre in their system like they have Dustin Wolf in net, or Zayne Parekh or Hunter Brzustewicz on the blueline, or Matvei Gridin or Andrew Basha on the wings. And if the Flames want to get to where they want to be as a hockey club – either now or in the future – it would be a lot easier if their best centres weren’t well into their 30s.
We’ll see what Craig Conroy can conjure up over the next weeks and months.
