As we await the inevitable end to the Johnny Gaudreau free agency saga, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli joined the Sportnet 960 The Fan morning show with Will Nault and Matt Rose on Tuesday morning to discuss the free agency landscape. Of course, Gaudreau’s negotiations with the Calgary Flames came up.
Here’s Frank:
I think these two sides have continued to engage over the last 24 hours or so. That there was a significant push from the Calgary Flames in the last 12 to 24 hours. And they’ve put a massive offer on the table. They’ve put an offer on the table that would not only make Johnny Gaudreau the richest player in Calgary Flames history, but on top of that one of the select few highest-paid players in the NHL today.
Seravalli spoke extensively in the hit, noting – as he has frequently – that he doesn’t think the negotiation is about money for Gaudreau, but rather about fit. But he noted that the Flames have been “ready, willing, able and prepared” to make Gaudreau a well-paid player if he decided to finish his career in Calgary.

Gaudreau turns 29 in August, and has been with the Flames organization since the 2011 NHL Draft. Since making his NHL debut on the final day of the 2013-14 season, Gaudreau has emerged as the top offensive player on the Flames roster but also one of the best offensive players in the NHL. From 2014-15 until present, Gaudreau leads the Flames in regular season points (by a margin of 180 points over Sean Monahan) and is sixth in the NHL (behind Connor McDavid, Patrick Kane, Sidney Crosby, Leon Draisaitl and Brad Marchand).
The Flames lose the ability to sign Gaudreau to an eight-year deal at 10 p.m. MT on Tuesday night. Free agency opens league-wide at 10 a.m. MT on Wednesday morning.
