The National Hockey League unveiled its awards for the 2022-23 season on Monday evening in Nashville, and several players left Bridgestone Arena with some serious hardware.

While Calgary Flames forward Mikael Backlund took home the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, Backlund and Elias Lindholm were the only Flames players who received votes for any competitive awards.

There are seven awards we consider “competitive” awards – the awards for being the best at something in hockey:

The Hart – player most valuable to his team
The Vezina – best goaltender
The Calder – best rookie
The Norris – best defenceman
The Selke – best defensive forward
The Lady Byng – player that best combines gentlemanly conduct with high level of performance
The Jack Adams – best coach

The Flames received votes in just one of those seven categories: the Selke.

Backlund finished sixth in Selke voting. He appeared on 90 of the 195 submitted ballots. He received 15 second-places, 22 third-places, 27 fourth-places and 26 fifth-places votes
Lindholm finished 10th in Selke Voting. He appeared on 8 ballots, receiving one second-place, four third-places and three fourth-place votes.

Aside from that, the Flames didn’t get much love from voters. That said, it was a tough season for the club, and their absence from the ballots submitted by the Professional Hockey Writers Association (all awards but Jack Adams and Vezina), NHL Broadcasters Association (Jack Adams) and NHL general managers (Vezina) is probably the best reflection of what was overall a pretty challenging 2022-23 season for the club.
